Girls only please....?!

Question: Is it safe to wear tampons on a regular basis (during your period)? My mom said it isn't... She said I should wear them once a year at most. But I do horseback riding, running, ice skating... And wearing a pad during that is really uncomfortable. And I definitely don't want to give all that up during my period.

So, is it safe to wear a tampon often?

Please post links to good health sites so I can convince my mom that it's safe. T
Thanks!

According to the insert that is included with your tampons (usually), there is minimal to no risk in wearing a tampon on a regular basis during your period. You just have to make sure that you change it often and don't leave it in for more than 8 hours. I would recommend wearing them during the day and at night while your sleeping wear pads so as to avoid having one in for too long. Also, try to stay away from the Super Plus version if possible since it is also shown that there may be a higher risk leaving these in too long, mostly because you're less likely to change them on a frequent basis. Here's some stuff I found:

I wear tampons during my whole period, every period. I hate pads! You just aren't supposed to wear one for longer then 8 hours, which is no big deal. I've been using tampons for about 15 years and have had no problems.

it's safe to wear them during each and everyone of you periods though I wouldn't recommend sleeping with one in and you can switch from tampon to pad to reduce risk of tss, just look on the side of a box for information about the safety

your mom is old fashioned. most girls i know don't even own pads. of course it is ok, just make sure you change them every 4 to 6 hours.

tell your mom to read the back of the tampon box. u will be fine.

It's safe. Just change them regularly - no more than 8 hours at a time max. You and your mom can google the info as easily as we can. Good luck.

Perfectly okay. Just remember to read the pamphlet so you can prevent TSS (Which I think your mom might be worried about). Basic tips are to change it once every 6 hours, use the absorbency you need (If you don't have a heavy period, don't get tampons for heavy periods), and to be comfortable with putting them in.

Yes, it's perfectly safe. It only becomes unsafe when you leave in the same tampon for an extended period of time. Good luck convincing your mother. : )

Yes it's safe. Plenty of women use tampons only and not pads at all.

It is safe to wear a tampon on a regular basis. only you have to be more careful than when wearing a pad you have to change the tampon around every 1-2 hrs to prevent Toxic shock syndrome or TSS. and never go to sleep in a tampon.

Your mom is worried about TSS. Read more here: http://www.kotex.com

yep. Just don't sleep in them. And change them every 7 hours. (you can go up to eight if you need to.)

It is perfectly safe. Just remember to change your tampon every 4-5 hours and get the right size that is needed for your flow. Also, do not ever wear tampons to bed. Wearing a tampon that long is not good for your body and could cause TSS (toxic shock syndrome). I have been wearing tampons for 3 years now and have no problems. However if you do not use the properly you do run the risk of health issues. Go to this site http://www.tampax.com/questionsanswers2.... this will give you more insight on tampons and will probably disprove a couple myths and misconceptions your mom may have. My mom was the same way. You just need to sit down and have a talk with her. Good luck.

I always use tampons. Just don't leave them in for longer than 8 hrs. or they could cause Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). I've been using them for 10 years and have had no problems. Have her check out tampax's website.
