Someone told me that a woman can get an abortion at 26 weeks in, is this possibl!

Question: It sounds like your friend is talking about whether it is LEGAL to do so. That depends on the state -- different states have different laws.

Generally, most states have a law that people can get an abortion on demand for the first 25-26 weeks of pregnancy (that's about 3-3 and 1/2 months). It is still possible to get an abortion after that, but only if a woman's doctor says it's necessary for health reasons (the baby is SO seriously malformed that it wouldn't live outside the womb at all, something like that). Then in the last couple months of pregnancy, an abortion is only legal if the mother's life is at stake.

Technically an abortion can be performed at any time, but whether or not it's LEGAL to do so changes depending on where in the pregnancy it is.

And to clarify things for Magenta, above -- a partial birth abortion is NOT the kind of thing you are describing. A partial birth abortion is an extremely, extremely rare operation that doctors only perform when any other means of abortion would not work; and it is only performed during the last trimester of a pregnancy (and, as I said earlier, it'd only be if the mother's life is in severe danger). At the 26-week mark, a very different procedure would be performed.

It is called a Partial Birth Abortion. It's very hard to find a doctor that will do an abortion past a certain time.
What they do, is inject the baby with a poison right through it's spinal cord, killing the baby instantly. Then a vaccum like tube is inserted and the baby is extracted.

Technically it's possible to abort a birth at any stage. It just gets more and more likely the abortion will fail and the baby will instead be born early with severe complications, so most OB-GYNs only abort in first trimester. Second trimester abortions are messier and tend to be the ones Pro-Lifers are against.
At 26 weeks they are taking about late or partial birth abortions. In many places you can't get them except for serious health problems. 26 is the last week before the third trimester. I don't know of any OB's that will perform a 3rd trimester abortion as it's possible for the fetus to survive at this point.
Late abortions are REALLY complicated, they are more likely to cause infections and real damage to the mother.

It may be possible - but finding a place that will might be the hard part.
Most places only offer abortions up to 24weeks. These abortions are done by D&E procedure. That is where they dilate & evacuate the fetus (in pieces). This is a 2-3 day procedure. They usually give an injection into the fetus the 1st day of the procedure to stop the heart - the fetus is not alive when the rest of the abortion is performed.

They sometimes also will use the D&X - dilation & extraction method. This is often used when the abortion is for medical / defect purposes...and the fetus is kept intact and not in pieces. This method is where they suction the head to collapse it, and deliver the rest of the body.
(I heard this was banned back in 2003)

By 26 weeks - they would have to do a partial-birth abortion. However, if I am right, and if the D&X procedure ban is still in effect...they would have to do it by D&E

From my research I had only found ONE place in the U.S. that offered up to 26 or 32 weeks (can't remember exactly) and it was found in Kansas.

its sad how irresponsible and cold some people can be to decide to get a young human chopped up and sucked out with a vacuum, abortion is just wrong. Why even consider or ask about it?

Hi Sweetie,
Yes, This is possible, however it has to be for a very good reason as the Health Board will determine this threw the critia of r mental state, age, reason for it, etc. because at 6 mths the fetus is on it's way to being fully developed U wud have to get a needle in the stomach to activate the labour & go threw the labour process. I don't judge people r their actions, I just wonder why now? U've had substancial time to do this before this time. My opinion (assuming r looking 4 some) & I'm in my 40's with much to share, especially here, is Wait it Out, go threw the pregnancy & save a Life & Give a Gift of Life to others who r unable to have a child of thier own. And start choosing now, as many couples r on waiting lists to adopt especially a newborn, all u have to do is find em threw Adoption Agencies R Private. U'll release a burden 4 U & make a couple that can't conceive "The Ultimate Gift" of Life of a Newborne this now developed Baby deserves. A Life, Chance to grow, Exceptionaly Happy Parents, that will give the child & Parents, All the Love, Nuturing, Happieness, & a
GIFT to all! Please think very carefully about this. And if U R down & out financially, they'll help U threw the process. Think about it, U can actually "Give the Gift of Life" that couples all over the World WANT so badly, but R unable to conceive!
Plse give this baby a chance in the World, he/she's soon to come & God will Thank-You million times over! I know U'll see with "Eye's Wide Open" The Most Humane decision Best of Luck, my freind!

LOL, Diana D

Idk. It's stupid have the baby.

it depends on where you live. They chopped up the baby and take it out piece by piece when your this far along. If you can live with yourself doing that then theres something wrong with you.

no, it's not. and stop having sex and screwing your life up if you're not ready for the consequences of it. and if it's not you than tell your dumb friend this advice... have some respect for the love!
