I'm thinking of getting a tubal?!

Question: I'm thinking of getting my tubes tied after the birth of my second child in May. I'm a little worried about a couple of things, though, like how long they make you wait after labor before having it done, and if your hospital stay is longer than usual. I also worry about the level of discomfort when you go home, because I have a seven year old to care for as well. Do they offer you pain relief when you go home if you're not breastfeeding? I don't want to be any more tired and cranky than I have to be, I'm very excited about the baby and I don't want o have the experience dulled by pain from surgery, and I'd like to be home for my little girl as soon as possible. Any help would be appreciated!!

I had a tubal right after my last baby. That was 7 years ago. They did the procedure right after delivery, they went through my belly button, so i have this little tiny scar in my belly button that no one can see. I did not have anymore discomfort than what I already had from giving birth. I stayed in the hospital for three days and was released. The only pain I felt was a little cramping, but that was right after the tubal, and they did give me pain medicine for the discomfort. I was up and walking the very next day. Good luck with your bundle of joy!

Those are all great questions, but questions for your doctor or nurse.

They will also help you answer the emotional questions too!
Your life situation etc..because it is a big decision.

Have fun w/ the new baby and trust your choice!!

I had mine after my last baby. I had to wait 5-6 weeks before the dr would do it. All though he told me if i need a c-section they would do it then. When I had it done it was an out patient procedure, went early in the morning and home right after lunch. As far as the pain...They gave me pain pills and I think i took 1 or maybe 2. When I got home the first day, I was sleepy, no pain. The next day, I hurt but not terrible, I ws told by my Dr not to lift any thing heavy for a few days, but i did anyway! My baby was 9 lbs 13 oz at birth so 5-6 weeks later she was well over 10 lbs. GOOD LUCK AND CONGRATS ON THE NEW BABY!!!

I would like to share you this information in helping you make an informed decision :

Tubal Ligation: The Untold Risks
Physicians and some women promote tubal sterilization as an extremely safe and very effective method of permanent fertility control. Yet the medical profession has known since 1930 that significant numbers of women suffer serious and irreversible complications from tubal ligations;

I had my tl shortly after birth. Most of my pain afterwards was from having my 9lbs baby's shoulders get stuck on the way out with no drugs!

But please do lots of research on having a tubal ligation before. I among so very many others really thought it was right at the time then regret it. Yet there are those who don't. You need to be very well informed before you completely make that decision. Really look into "Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome" aka "PTLS" before hand. It really does occur!

A good alternative would be the 5 year birth control implants. That way you don't have to thin about b/c but there's an option to change your mind. Even if your sure now you don't want more!
