It's only purpose is to trap smells(pheromones)
That was important in the wild for finding other sexually mature members of our species, but in modern society we would rather not smell each other, that's why most people shave or trim to one degree or another.
Some people say it's top prevent bacteria or things getting in the vagina, but if it was, like you said, we would have had it when we were younger, and then why would guys have it? and why would we have it in our armpits? it's not protecting anything there, just trapping armpit smell! ugghh!
Also, one of the things doctors recommend to women with recurrent yeast infections is to sleep without underwear and shave their pubic hair, which allows more airflow and yeast like warm moist environments. Women entering the Italian army are even required to shave their pubes before boot camp to cut down on the number of yeast infections occuring in boot camp!
Why is this girls only? It doesn't even apply to girls only.

we don't HAVE to have it. It just comes naturally.There is no importance.
