Once you start puberty a white and/or clear, non-foul smelling discharge is normal. The vagina is self-cleaning. This same discharge increases the closer you get to ovulation and when you are sexually aroused.
Different Types of Discharge:
White: Thick, white discharge is common at the beginning and end of your cycle. Normal white discharge is not accompanied by itching. If itching is present, thick white discharge can indicate a yeast infection.
Clear and stretchy: This is "fertile" mucous and means you are ovulating.
Clear and watery: This occurs at different times of your cycle and can be particularly heavy after exercising.
Yellow or Green: May indicate an infection, especially if thick or clumpy like cottage cheese or has a foul odor.
Brown: May happen right after periods, and is just "cleaning out" your vagina. Old blood looks brown.

It's discharge. It's normal, most women have some discharge every single day. Its just your vagina's natural way of cleaning itself. If you want, you can use panty liners so it doesn't get on your undies. =)
It's cervical mucus. It's not the vagina cleaning itself out or you would have had it when you were younger too. It serves a reproductive function. It's actually there to help sperm survive as long as possible in the vagina, which most mothers wouldn't feel comfortable telling their daughters so they just say it' the vagina cleaning itself lol
The only thing that is "discharge" is the result of an infection and that IS the vagina cleaning itself, but cervical mucus is not.
