What is wrong with my body, did depo do this to me?!

Question: I took depo provera 2.5 yrs ago for 6 mon. I now feel constantly anxious, gained 50lbs w/excerse im up to 250. my mother and stepfather of 10 years got divorced and my dad almost died around the same time I started depo. I dont sleep, when i do i ve been told i often stop breathing for extended time. I cant afford medical. I am a college student. After depo I got on a diff birth control w/MORE ESTROGEN (stupid health dept.) which caused more problems, when i stopped the new bc my armpit and leg hair has almost stopped growing (yay for not having to shave often) and my periods became up to 8 wks apart. I was and still am overly emotional alot, I cry or yell at the stupidest things. My periods got back to normal after 3 months of progesterone cream. I was told i was prediabetic several years ago and have recently been told it could be metabolic insulin rejection. my thyroid is fine I still feel super anxious about daily things and let little things drive me nuts. what's wrong w/me

This has absolutely nothing to do with taking Depro-provera. You may gain a small amount of weight (5 lbs or so) while on birth control but not 50. It's impossible.

You obviously have been under a lot of stress and your eating may be emotional and unconscious. Other than that.... you need to make a list of your symptoms and when you get them and then make an appointment with your family doctor. You may be suffering from a bit of depression/anxiety after everything that you've been through. As for not being able to afford medical attention, every college has a free clinic for it's student, go there.

It sounds like you really should see a doctor. I did take depo injections for a while several years ago. I also put on a lot of weight almost immediately. Of course my periods stopped too but I think that's common and most people are aware of that. I was very emotional too but I also had endometriosis, which they hadn't diagnosed at the time, so I think dealing with that along with the injections could have played a large role in that. You need to make sure that isn't something really wrong.......try to see a doctor.

i have never heard of depo doing something like that, i would talk to my doctor even if i had to arrange payments cause it sounds like a serious problem.

:'( ur a mess!

Sounds like you really need to see a doctor. Most communities and schools offer a free or low cost clinic. Call your school and ask if they can recommend a low cost clinic in the area if they don't have one themselves, or use google to find one in your area. This is nothing you can get diagnosed here, but some possibilities are an anxiety disorder or depression (this is very common in colleges, especially when you've had so many difficulties in your family in recent years), hormonal imbalance, or something else completely. I seriously recommend seeing a physician ASAP.

Good luck!

It is very possible to gain a significant amount of weight while taking depo. There is a right method of contraception for every women, and some are more sensitive to the side effects in some methods than others. I've had several friends who were very sensitive to depo, all four of them gaining large amounts of weight in a very short time. All of them had always been a bit on the skinny side, only to see a weight gain of 10-40 lbs.

Not every woman has this experience of course. It sounds like you might have some other things going on, but the depo probably didn't help matters.

You have my sympathy; I am unemployed and my health benefits have run out, so I know what it's like. Stress and lack of sleep will make you gain weight and will make you diabetic. Doesn't your college have an infirmary where students are treated free or cheap? You need to get a CPAP machine; it keeps a constant gentle air pressure that forces air through your breathing passages while you sleep. Try eBay or garage sales for a discounted one.

Another thing that will help is a low-carb diet. I have been diabetic for 10 years now, and have followed a low-carb way of life for most of that time. I also take a chromium supplement; chromium GTF is the best, but I have used others when they were on sale. Get a copy of Atkins (should be available at the library for free, or at garage sales cheap). The paperback is about $6 new; you may be able to sqeeze enough out of your budget for that. When you lose weight, your breathing may return to normal. If you can get a prescription for 10 mg buspirone twice a day for anxiety, it's on the $4 prescription list (for 60 pills) at Wal-Mart and Target. So is metformin in different dosages for diabetes/metabolic syndrome. Also, https://www.pparx.org/Intro.php is a website about free prescription help if your household income is less than $42,000 a year. If you are 22 years old or younger, and a student, you may qualify for medical coverage in your state.
