My friends use tampons ALL the time, this isn't safe is it?!

Question: Whenever they have their period, they never use pads, they use tampons. I like pads better because you don't have to worry about TSS or having something inside of you (eww!) .

Like EVERY single time they change, it's to a tampon. Even through the night, one of my friends says she sets an alarm every 6 hours in the night and then changes it. I KNOW this isn't safe so how can I tell them that? I've already said "you guys know you shouldn't use tampons all the time.. it's bad for you" but they just either ignore me or say "its fine!" , "yes you can!" "who told you you can't" "shut up!" "whatever" etc. You get the point. How do i tell them, and is it safe?

Don't worry about all the mean answers, some people are just rude. Anyways, if you are still a young teen the tampon issue can be difficult to adjust to at first. As far as safety goes, it is ok to leave it in overnight as long as you remember it in the morning. TSS is very rare and can be caused by other things than just tampons. Just read the directions in the box and it will have all the info. Also, till this day I use the slenders bc I find the bigger tampons annoying and difficult. If you're still a virgin its intimidating but I recommend locking yourself in the bathroom and figuring it all out. I think using pads and tampons are the best combo so good luck and try to keep an open mind it all :)

Oh yeah, its not messy if you use the ones with applicators. There is no residue on your hands at all, I recommend Tampax or Playtex.

I'm 20 and I've been using only tampons for about 5 years and had no problem. It's perfectly safe, as long as you don't keep them in for longer than 8 hours and you use the right size.

You should really read up on things before you go and start thinking you know it all. You are completly wrong.

It is perfectly safe as long as it is changed in the right time frame.

Edit - Sweetie, there is no need to get your hands dirty. Ask your mum, or maybe a trusted older female for advice about applicators, etc if you want to learn more. It is a much more hygienic option at the end of the day. Your friends are right, however their responses aren't very educational!

Wow, I didn't know there's a difference between tampons and pads. You learn something new everyday here.

i like how you say you KNOW it isnt safe
but at the end you ask if it safe or not

i think tampons suck and pads rule

It is not necessairly as horrible ad you think. Many people do this and are fine.

you can use tampons safely all the time when you have your period. The thing that makes it unsafe is to not cange it regularily... this allows bacteria to grow which can cause TSS

tampon is the cleanest way to go. i would never use a pad unless absolutely necessary. it is totally safe if you use them properly

its fine as long as theyre not using super absorbant ones. sure if they sleep with them there is a chance the string could go up or they could 4get they had 1 in, then u hav problems, but dont worry about it. theyre fine

Wearing a tampon through every cycle is not bad. What's bad is leaving one in for over 6 hours. TSS.

They really shouldn't be wearing one to bed.
.

umm ya its safe the only way u can get tss is if u leave it in too long without changing it! so dont worry! its safe or they wouldnt sell it! i know lots of ppl who use em its safe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tampons are completely safe. You don't have to worry about TSS if you use them correctly and using one overnight is fine. You're friends are right, not you. Stop harassing them.

tampons are sooo much more comfortable but i couldnt use them comfortably until i wasnt a virgin anymore. Tampons are ok but its not a good idea to use them every night. I use tampons all day and pads at night.

How can you say using tampons is sick?

Having blood drip out of you constantly for a week is sick! Smelling like fish is sick...and having dried blood crusties and clots hang out in your panties is revolting,

Don't you think that if tampons were THAT dangerous, they'd be illegal? I've been wearing tampons since I was 13...10 years of constant tampon use...and I wouldn't change it for the world!

Your friends are right..."it's fine"!

Tampons are safe for use as long as you change them ever 8 hrs and you only use them during your period. They are way mor conveniant and comfortable than pads. I have been using them for 10 years and have never had a problem. I think you are just fearful of something you dont understand.

Tampon use is actually very safe and comfortable, and max time for one tampon is 8 hours. I don't know a single grown woman that uses pads, including myself.
in short, you are worrying over nothing. TSS is such a rare condion, and no real damage can come from using just tampons.

and who did tell you you can't? it's really a pretty well know fact that it's not harmful.

The only unsafe ways and times to use a tampon are the following:

-Keeping the same tampon in for longer than the recommended time (which I've always been told is no more than 6 hours)
-Using a tampon when you aren't on your period (some girls and women think that they can use a tampon to catch discharge--it's not only unsafe, but unnecessary, because daily discharge is nowhere near enough to need a tampon's level of absorbency)

Other than that, it's up to your friends to decide what they prefer. Women who choose tampons like the fact that they are comfortable and cannot be felt while they are wearing one, plus they keep them much cleaner than pads. Women's choice of which is more comfortable all depends on preference, blood flow, and frequency of change.

okay, I'm 28 years old, and haven't used a pad since I was like 12. I say EWW to having stuff all over you, not EWW to having something very safely inside of you. Women have been doing this for centuries. Only back then, they had to make their own! Your friends are right, it's fine. And the one who sets her alarm doesn't even need to do that. Your flow slows down while you are laying down. It's fine. I would always recommend using the Tampax name brand, because it has the fewest cases of TSS reported in a year. Also, in all of the 17 years that I have been menstruating, I have never heard of anyone I know, or any friend of a friend of a friend ever actually getting TSS. You do need to change it ever 5 hours or so, and if you're scared about the night, then by all means, set the alarm and change it, but that is a little OCD.

Stop worrying so much. Wouldn't you rather use a tampon than have something diaper-like on your body, and feel dirty because you have you know what all over your skin down there? Think about it. Tampax is a lot more sanitary.

It's good that you worry about your friend's health, but look up some statistics of people who actually get TSS, and don't worry so much.

ps- how do you KNOW this isn't safe? who told you this? if you are scared, call an OBGYN's (a female health doctor) office, and ask.

u dont get blood all over ur fingers. there is an applicator. its clean and easy...

have u ever tried using one before?

When inserting a tampon a finger does NOT go into the vagina to push the tampon into place., An applicator is used. You hold the end of it, push the tube and in it is, no blood, no mess, no problems.

actually, tampons are perfectly safe and if you change them as recommended, it is alright to sleep with them in. using tampons or pads is a personal choice. there are lots of benefits to wearing tampons, ie.. less mess, no nasty smells, and no diaper feel.
there is nothing "eww" about wearing a tampon. i think it's kinda gross to be sitting in a puffed out pad, soaked in your own blood,... but hey, that's just my opinion.

I don't know how your tampons are in your country, but in America our tampons have STRINGS to pull out the damn thing so you won't touch the blood. I can't imagine wearing a pad and sitting in that yucky stuff all day...UGH! Ditch the pad, and go to tampons. they are completely safe and more sanitary than pads, besides if you leave a pad on long enough it will start to smell!!!!

well im guessing they like the feeling if u know what i mean, don't u think so ?
