Does anyone use the Today Sponge for their only contraceptive?!

Question: If you or your partner do, I'd like to know how you like it. I KNOW sterilization is best (this is a monagamous relationship) but my man doesn't want to wear the condom and we are too old to start a family at this point in our lives. PLEASE, no smart a** answers. I've always used condoms with anyone I was with and am not sure if this will work or not.....

I never had a problem with it until my husband got the spermicide in his urethra. It wasn't a pleasant experience. The sponge foams because you get it went when you insert it. I might suggest waiting a little bit before becoming active to help prevent the chances of that happening.

It works great however. When used correctly it is just as safe as using a condom.

It is a spemacide based method and spermacides are only 80% affective so I would use another methode along with it he may not want to use a condom but does he want a baby? and there is such thing as a female condom. There is also something called a diaphram. But to be 100% precent sure I would ask a doctor what they thought.

I haven't used the sponge myself, but I know that it is not as effective as some other forms of birth control, so I would recommend pairing it with an alternative method. For example, something like the Depo shot or an IUD may be beneficial for someone who is a little bit older as it is less maintenance and you are more likely to be aware of your scedule and when it is time to go in for a top up (that is if you can use hormonal birth controls).

The only thing I can really think of, other than the lower rate of prevention, is that it takes some of the spontaneity out of sex. For example, you would either need to go wet the sponge with water and put it in everytime you are going to have sex, or put it in and wear it every day that you are going to see your partner in preparation of the fact that you may have sex that day (which would be a waste of $$).

But we are lucky that there are so many options out there today :) You just have to find the right one for yourself and your partner.

P.S the female condom can be a bit difficult to keep in place during sex and can be noisy!
