Why did i spot?!


Question: today is feb 5. my last period was jan 16. had unprotected sex (withdrawal) last jan. 27. my cycle is 30-46 days. i took 8 pills as emergency contaception last jan 28. i noticed spotting today (feb 5). can i be pregnant? or can this be an effect of the hormone pills?

It's the progestin in the pills. It's really nothing to worry about unless is gets very heavy and is accompanied by severe abdominal pain. Then get to a doc ASAP. But a bit of spotting is fine and I'm sure your period WILL come.

Remember, usually if 100 women have unprotected sex one time during the second or third week of their monthly menstrual cycle, 8 of them will get pregnant. But if those same 100 women use ecp, only one will get pregnant. You will not be the 1 in 100! Keep me posted...I'll have my fingers crossed for you!

"What if I bleed after taking emergency contraceptive pills?

Most of the time, there is no reason to worry if you bleed after taking emergency contraceptive pills (also called "morning after pills" or "day after pills"). Although not a common side effect, the hormones in the pills (either progestin alone or progestin combined with estrogen) can cause some women to bleed at unexpected times. If that is the cause of your bleeding, it is not dangerous and you should expect it to go away by itself after you get your next period.


You should know, however, that your unusual bleeding could be caused by something else that, in rare cases, may be more serious. It
