Dealing with cramps in school?!

Question: Hey there, so I just got my period, I hate going to school when I have it, but due to the new attendance policy, I can't missa ll that much school. So, how do I deal with it at school? I normally have very bad cramps, I take advil, but it doesn't seem to help all that well, any tips?

When I started getting my period, my cramps were so bad that I, too, would just stay in bed and skip school. But my doctor put me on birth control and it's been fantastic. Obviously it's something you need to discuss with your doctor to decide if its right for you, but definitely bring it up. It'll make your period very regular, make it lighter, reduce your cramps, and when you start having sex, you'll have more protection. If that doesn't seem like an option, Midol sometimes worked reasonably well. Good luck!

Uhh I know what you mean! It just happened to me last week. It just came on and cramps were the worst yet! Well, carry 2 advils instead of one and take it when you know the cramps are comming. Don't wait! Slow down on work in class if it hurts that bad.

Ok over the counter crap does not work. Try some ibuprofen from your doc.

I don't know the school policy, but your parents should be able to call you in sick. The school can't punish you for medical problems by law.

well.
I'm 17, and i've had my period since I was 13 years old. I never really got cramps until about the last 2 years or so. I take Pamprin, Its like midol, but I think it works alot better. Try wearing loose clothing and when you are sitting in your desk at school, try putting a little pressure on the spot where your cramps hurt the most. It normally helps me :).
If that doesnt work, maybe you can ask the school nurse for a Hotpack, They should have them in the same place they have their ice packs. :). That generally works for me too.

Ibuprofen or Motrin work very well for cramps because they focus on the muscle. Make sure you are taking the Advil consistently as directed, so that it will have the best overall effect. In addition you can make a small warm compress or use heat patches (buy at the drug store) to help relieve the muscles. If you have other symptoms like bloating or nausea, try using Pamprin or Midol. If you are using tampons this can also cause more clotting which may lead to more cramping. Depending on your flow and level of activity you may want to avoid tampons for as much of the day as possible. Oh and chocolate . . . but thats just to make you forget about the cramps! Hee hee hope this helps

Pain during your periods is NOT NORMAL. I like what the other responders said. If Advil is not working, try Aleve. Some NSAIDS work better than others for some people. Talk to your doctor/nurse practitioner. Also, check out The Endometriosis Association, they have a TEEN group that might be able to help you.
Good luck to you.
