What are the Pros and cons of getting the HPV vaccination?!
Question: This is a note to A Canadian:
I'm pretty sure hmm06 isn't wary of the HPV vaccination because of the possibility of getting something as minor as shingles. She's just pointing out that if a vaccine can have side effects like shingles (if indeed the chicken pox vaccination can cause it), who knows what other side effects a different vaccine might cause?
Be sure you understand what people are talking about before you try to "correct" them.
Having said that, I personally don't think it's too terribly likely that it will have side effects...but who knows? My main reasons for not getting it are:
1. I'm not currently sexually active, and there aren't any appealing prospects around here. *sigh*
2. I don't know anything about the vaccine--I've heard of it, but I don't know how much it costs, where to get it, etc. And because I'm not sexually active, I'm not exactly in a rush to find out this information.
I'll probably get it eventually.

The pro is pretty clear-- protection against the four most common strains of HPV.
The cons are minuscule: nobody likes getting a needle, injections can be a little painful, and in some cases, the injection site can be itchy. And, of course, that there are many more than four strains of HPV--however, better to be protected against four than against none, right?
I have had all of my Gardasil shots, and I think the worst part for me was a slight pain in my arm from my third injection.

To respond to your "additional information", we are each responding with our own personal views and opinions on the shots. Nobody is being forced to get this vaccination. Some of us may not have heard about these deaths. Some of us may have chosen to get the shots before such serious consequences were found to happen. I have never heard anything myself, which means it happened after I'd completed mine, or means that they were isolated incidents. Personally, I like the idea that I am protected against the possibility of contracting those four most dangerous strains of HPV. I believe in the safety of this vaccine. It does not contain any strain, dead or alive, of the virus.
Basically, it is each woman's individual choice. For the most part, everyone who has responded to your question answered with their views on the vaccination, thinking that you were earnestly looking for advice and opinions. You can get off of your soapbox, because while your added info will help to guide other women, it's not your business to put us in our place.
Oh, and there's no vaccine for men because men can't get cervical cancer. Its purpose is to prevent HPV because HPV leads to cervical cancer. If men don't want to contract HPV then they should do what the rest of us do for the rest of the STDs out there--practice safe sex. Besides, you say that men are the "carriers" of HPV- if that is true, then being vaccinated wouldn't do them any good, because it is a preventative measure, not a cure.
The only con is getting a shot.
So with everything else a pro...anyone who doesn't get it must not have sufficient grey matter.
The reason I will not get it is they don't know the side effects 10-20 years down the road.
Perfect example: The chicken pox vaccine, they have now realized that the vaccine causes shingles (which is more painful than chicken pox) and that it doesn't guarantee immunity. The vaccine came out in 95...about 10 years later they found side effects.
How do we know 10 years down the road what side effects this is going to cause? Is this going to cause different types of cancer?
I would like to see a lot more research done, and 10-20 years before I would ever get this or let my kids get it.
This is to the bit*h further down, do you think I don't read? YOU need to do the research before you come on here and spout out your nonsense. Besides the fact that it was an EXAMPLE. Do you know what that means? I was using that to show that we don't always know what is going to happen 10 years down the road with a new vaccine.
So what are you going to say 10 years down the road when all these girls end up with other forms of cancer BECAUSE of this vaccine or end up with reproductive problems. Are you going to say ohh sorry you can't have a kid but at least you didn't get cancer?
Pro: Your protected from the most common type of cancer...
Con: Stupid people that won't get this vaccination due to the idea that "A Vaccination Will Cause A Teenage Orgy" might just die of cancer...
GO GET THE GOD DAMNED VACCINATION!!
What exactly is the PRO CANCER argument?? This is a protection against one of the most common forms of CANCER... Not a "Sex" issue...

Shingles has an extremely rare incidence of death whereas cervical cancer has a very high death rate...did that cross your mind at all??????
