It sounds like you aren't inserting it far enough.
If it is far enough you shouldn't be able too feel it.
It may be a little sore going in and coming out cause you may not be "wet" enough but other than that it shouldn't hurt.
find a low absorbency (smaller)
My personal fav is Tampax sport

try a different tampon. There's like 100 different ones out there one of them has to be right for you

Depending on what you are using.. try using a smaller one.... and u may not be inserting it far enough.

Take them out before having sex!

You might want to try tampons with a different type of applicator, or a different brand. I use tampons with a plastic applicator, because it turned out that the cardboard applicator would leave just the tiniest bit of the tampon sticking out of the vagina, which actually causes a lotttt of pain! The ones I like best are Tampax Compak. Just make sure your tampon is really in there all the way.

Wear a simple maxi pad....don't worry about the swimming part...ask your self...when taking a bath do i discharge in the tub so why would I discharge in a pool...simple physics.

First, if a tampon is in the correct place you can't feel it. So if it hurts, it's not in right. It should not hurt to insert one either. If you have problems, it may be you need a smaller size and a little more practice in getting them inserted. They make junior size tampons, and that's probably your best bet. You can also use a dab of petroleum jelly just on the very top to make insertion a bit easier. Probably your best bet is to get a large box, close yourself in the bathroom, read the insert to see different ways to insert one, and then just practice until you get it down and can do it easily and comfortably. A correctly inserted tampon cannot just fall out, it won't come out until you remove it. When you insert a tampon, you should not be able to feel the end sticking out anywhere- nothing but the string. It may also be that you are just still on the small side of things, and will need to wait until you get a little older to be able to use one comfortably. If you are still on the petite side of things, and young, this may be the case. At any rate, find a lighter absorbancy tampon, preferably junior size. Make sure your flow is going on well- don't use one if you aren't on your period or are just spotting a bit. And just practice inserting them until you feel comfortable. If all else fails, ask a trusted female you know- mom, the nurse, somebody with a bit of experience.

you should definately use a tampon with a plastic applicator.
I suggest tampax pearl they are the best I have come across.

try using the jr. size if regular bothers you. if it came out in the pool it wasn't inserted all the way, or inserted properly.

If it hurts upon insertion you should put a little lubricating jelly on the tip first. Be sure that it is all the way inside you. Insert it laying on your back with your knees spread, or sitting on the toilet.

Relax as much as possible while you are inserting it, It won't go in properly if you are tense.

Be sure that you are removing the applicator (this goes without saying!!! But if you leave the applicator inside of you that would be huge cause for discomfort!!!

There are instructions with pictures on the carton.

you must be wearing it wrong and/or the wrong size.

you probably arent inserting it far enough in! read the directions on the box and push it ALL the way in. you shouldnt feel it at all!

you lie so bad

they dont go in the butt
