How much does it hurt when your hymen breaks?!

Question: I'm twelve going on 13, and really worried what its going to feel like. i've heard it bleeds, but how much? is it like your period? I do ballet, used to do horse-riding and have fallen off my bike a few times!! ;)
but i was wondering, if i broke my hymen before i lost my virginity, would it not hurt when i did have my first time?
is there not an operation you can have to break it? i'm not sure if i've already broken it.... But once, i inserted a tampon (not near my period) and a speck of blood came out. does that conclude it's already broken?

Who says your hymen breaking will hurt at all?

I'd say most girls hymen breaks without them even noticing so there is no pain at all, I certainly didn't feel any pain when mine broke just a sort of pop and there was only a little bit of blood, about the same amount as mid-cycle spotting or at the very end of your period, sort of pinky discharge rather than blood. Some girls actually find their hymen breaking to be a pleasurable experience, not painful at all.

We are all different, it might hurt you, it might not hurt you, you might enjoy it or find it sexually pleasurable, there may be no blood, a little blood or a lot of blood, but you really shouldn't worry there are certainly worse things in life then your hymen breaking being painful and it certainly isn't going to be gut-renching pain if it does cause you pain.

Is your hymen actually in tact now, or do you have one at all?

If you lay yourself down somewhere comfortable, like laying on your your bed with some pillows under your back, then place a mirror between your legs making sure that you have good light to see everything you need to, then just look. Your hymen is around the opening to your vagina, if it is in tact it will look like a thin ring of flesh pulled around the opening, where as if it is broken you will see little rough edges of flesh. Chances are you have already broken your hymen without noticing!

If you check out this site it will show you a photo of the vulva (external part of your genitals) with the hymen - http://www.the-clitoris.com/f_html/hymen... (warning: this is a photo of the vulva!) or check out Wikipedia's entry on hymens - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hymen I also HIGHLY recomend this site for all sexual health questions - http://www.scarleteen.com

Loosing your virginity shouldn't be painful - the idea that sex for the first time is painful is total myth!

Excluding some health problem then the only reason loosing your virginity would be painful is if your hymen breaks (as said above, not always a painful thing) or if you are not ready for sex - your vagina naturally lengthens itself when you are arroused, it stretches and it produces lubrication, as long as you have had plenty of foreplay to turn you on (ideally to the point where you orgasm) and you are emotionally ready to have sex then it should be pleasurable not painful.

Unfortanatly this myth about it having to be painful is too common, a lot of girls like you think that sex for the first time will be painful so they get worried about doing it, because they are worried they tense up rather than relax, and if their partners aren't experienced they may not be able to relax you through foreplay like they need to. Because girls think it will be painful they worry which leads to it being painfull, thus they believe the myth is true.

If your hymen is broken before you have sex for the first time then this takes one more thing out of the situation that could make sex for the first time painful for you. Read this article on sex and pain for the first time - http://www.scarleteen.com/article/pink/f...

A doctor can break it for you, but it is not needed unless you have a particularly thick hymen - it would be just as painful or not painful with a doctor doing it as it would be doing it yourself or a partner doing it.

Oh, and as a note, tampons are very bad for your health because they absorb vaginal fluids stopping your vagina from cleaning itself, it causes vaginal splitting, they also give bacteria a place to multiply and puts chemicals into your body. It is particularly bad when not on your period because as well as putting yourself at risk when you don't need to the tampons only have your vaginal fluids to absorb (same is true at night when blood isn't flowing down into the tampon - thus why you don't use them at night) so preventing your vagina cleaning itself and higher risk of vaginal splitting.
You should NEVER put yourself at additional risk by using tampons when not on your period, you risk vaginal splitting, vaginal infections like bacterial vaginosis and TSS - which is rare but still very serious and the risk is hugely increased with tampon use. If you want to use internal menstrual options then think about getting a menstrual cup instead as these can be used at any time and are far safer and cleaner than tampons - http://www.menstrualcups.org
