I am getting the copper iud in 2 weeks. What have been your experiences with it?!

Question: Different women have different experiences. Please don't read the answers so far and freak out that the copper IUD is the worst thing you could possibly do.

Yes...the copper ones can cause heavier, more painful periods. And yes, with ANY type of IUD there is a slightly increased risk for ectopic pregnancy. HOWEVER...the effects and risks vary from person to person just like with any other form of birth control, medication, etc.

I had the copper IUD inserted about 4 months ago and my periods haven't really changed all that much since then. When I had it inserted, I had a pap smear done at the same time since I was overdue for one and the only way I could tell the difference in what my doctor was doing was because she talked to me the entire time. I did have some MILD cramping the rest of the day but I just took some Advil. I also bled a little bit over the next couple of days but that's just from the "trauma" of having the device inserted through the cervix into your uterus.

So far, I haven't had any problems or side effects from the device. But again, every woman is different. Do some research on the device (try WEDMD) and if you think you might be a candidate talk to your doctor to see what their opinion is.

I had extremely heavy and long periods every month, and after about 4 years of having it, I began to bleed everytime my hubby and I had sex. I had to have it removed.

I now have the Mirena, and I am thrilled with it.

One word of advice - have an iud inserted when you are in the middle of your period - your cervix will be open, and it will hurt less. And take 2 ibuprofen an hour before your appointment.

I had both the copper & the hormonal type, and both times my experience was HORRID. But with the copper one, I nearly passed out during insertion. Sex was inoterable (it hurt SO bad!!), I bled every single day for 5 months (with the exception of only about 5 days total out of 150!), and I finally ended up in the ER when the IUD ripped through my uterine wall and started tearing up my intestines.

I cannot in ANY good conscience recommend an IUD...and especially not the copper one.

I don't want to worry you but i had an ectopic pregnancy 18 years ago with one of those. I now have the merina coil fitted which is completely different. this is not made from copper but plastic, it is also coated with progestrone hormone which is released slowly over a 5 year period. i have had mine in for the last 2 years and i haven.t looked back. speak to your doctor before you make a final decision. just to know what your options are. good luck.

I've never had one. The idea of a foreign body inside me freaks me out. But i do know 3 people (including my mother) who got pregnant using an IUD as birth control.

COPPER inside of you?

If you place a penny in 80 year old oak trees bark

it will be dead in 2 years

if you drop a penny in a 80 gallon fish tank (other than african)
it will kill the fish

when I was 19 and a virgin home from the army
a real nice woman 51 yrs old was my first partner
and sorta teacher

she used an IUD put in and took it out

that means CLEANER for you

of course improper use can occur

but COPPER inside of you day by day
entering your blood ??

are you sure ?
