1. Low thyroid function or output of thryroid hormone
2. Multiple including unknown (immune disease, cancer, age, exposure to certain chemicals?, genetics, removal of thyroid gland)
3. TSH level is the gold standard although there is a lot of debate that it shouldn't be. T4 and T3 can also be checked
4.a few are hair loss including eyebrows, feeling cold, low temperature, constipation, and more
5. Replacement of hormone therapy. usually a synthetic such as synthroid or levothyroxin, there are also natural formuals such as Armour thyroid.

This might give you a starting point.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypothyroid...

Your thyroid gland regulates certain hormones that control the production of cells, and other bodily functions. The root word "hypo", means "under". So hypothyroidism is a disease where the body does not produce enough of these hormones and this can eventually lead to serious health problems and death.

it is an under active thyroid.....some symptoms are Fatigue, Depression, slight weight gain, cold intolerance, excessive sleepiness, dry coarse hair, constipation, dry skin, muscle cramps, elevated cholesterol levels. It could be tested for and it is easy to treat...you must see a doctor for a definitive diagnosis

Hypothyroidism is a condition where your thyroid doesn't produce enough hormone. Ususaly caused by genetics but lifestyle can contribute. Dx is made by drawing blood and checking the T3 and T4 levels in your blood. When and if you go to a dr. and want tested for this condition make sure they check the T3 and T4. It is treated generally with a pill which you will have to have blood levels checked until the correct dose is found.

Go to WebMD it answers all of your questions and it would be factual not just what people are telling you.
