Abnormal pap smear???!

Question: My doc's office called me this morning and told me that my pap results were abnormal. I was negative for HPV. The nurse said that most likely there wasn't enough for the lab to properly test. Is that possible, or is she just saying that. I am supposed to go back in three months... Is this common?

Same thing happened to me, dear.

I got abnormal pap results and tested negative for HPV on three different occasions.

I had mild cervical dysplasia, I had to do a colposcopy, and some kind of cream.
In a few months, after many pap smears, it cleared up on its own.

Don't worry. You caught it and it'll get better. =)

yes it is very common. My last two paps were abnormal. but my GP told me not to worry and keep going back every 3 - 6 months so she can keep an eye on it. Only when the cells change slightly in those months do they do more tests.
Just keep an eye on it and definatley keep going regularly. I was really scared to go back for my second one and i left it for a year! when i eventually went back the GP wasnt happy with me! haha but everything was fine thank goodness.
xx

Yes it is very common. Sometimes labs get their tests wrong or just need more samples to test. I have been through this many times.

yes...this is common. The same thing happened to me and I had to go every three months to keep an eye on it. Well, it cleared up on it's own. A lot of the time in this stuff can clear up on it's own with a healthy diet and stuff.

This happens all the time. The fact that you were (-)HPV is a great thing, but sometimes enough cells were not scraped off the surface of the cervix to analyze, but it is still very important for you to keep your f/u appt's in order to detect abnormalities before they progress too far.

When my pap came back abnormal the first time they had me come back right away for a n other proceedure, where they found nothing, and then I had to go back every 3 months for a year and then every 6 months. I would have been done but the very last one came back abnormal again. After that time my NP told me the same thing that they probly didnt have enough to do the test. But I have found in more recent years that she doesnt know what she is talking about most of the time. I havent had any problems since I swiched docs

If you're HPV negative, there are plenty of other things that can cause an abnormal pap smear -- sometimes even stress.

You should be fine.

A Pap smear allows your doctor to look at the cells from your cervix (the lower part of your womb) and see if there are any problems. An abnormal Pap smear means that the cells of your cervix have shown some slightly abnormal changes. Some abnormal cells are more likely than others to be cancerous. Ask your doctor which of the following changes you have.
ASC stands for atypical squamous cells. Squamous cells form the surface of your cervix. ASC is divided into two categories:
ASC-US means that although some of your cells are not normal, your doctor may not know why the cells changed or what impact it will have on you. These changes are usually not serious and may be caused by a vaginal infection or infection with a virus called HPV (human papillomavirus). Your doctor may want to do a follow-up examination such as a repeat Pap smear or HPV testing.
ASC-H means that some of your cells are not normal and there is a small possibility that they may be precancerous. Your doctor will probably want to perform a colposcopy, which will allow your doctor to more closely examine your cervix.
