When you have an gynecology examination. Is it meant to hurt?!

Question: I had a swab about two years ago and it didnt hurt and I felt really relaxed.

A month ago I had an exam to see why I suffer with this certain pain, and OH MY GOD! it felt as if she was ripping me in half, I needed to scream that bad I put my hand over my mouth and she kept saying "bear with me a few more minutes" I never want another one done if it is meant to feel like this.

Can anyone tell me if its meant to hurt like that?

Maybe your gyn didn't use the right sized speculum for you, they do come in sizes you know...

Maybe your tissue was extremely sensitive and it increased any discomfort you might have been experiencing. Tightening your muscles doesn't help either.

Putting your hand over your mouth to stop from screaming is not as effective as telling your doctor that she is seriously hurting you. The exam should not hurt at all, unless there is a medical reason for it, it should feel like your swab two years ago.

The speculum is what hurts. It hurts a LOT MORE if you don't make a conscious effort to relax your muscles. You have a lot of muscle down there and if you're contracting them because you're in pain, then it's going to be far worse. Breathe deep and concentrate on keeping the lower half of your body relaxed.

No, all it's meant to feel like is a slight force. Its not exactly uncomfortable but it definitely isn't painful

I suppose it all depends on the procedure

I've never had a regular pelvic exam/pap test hurt like that, but I did have an endometrial biopsy once, and it hurt a LOT, and I'm sure I cleared out the waiting room with my screams. I could hear doors slamming and people running. :D

You should ask your doctor to explain why it hurt this time, and if there's anything to do to make it better next time. Like a tranquilizer beforehand.

I don't think it's meant to hurt as such, more uncomfortable.
However I do understand what you mean. My last smear was really painful and uncomfortable and I'm not looking forward to my next one. I was surprised at this because they've never hurt before.
I can only assume that the person taking the swab is less experienced or maybe you have a condition which has made you more tender down there. Personally I felt as though the nurse was pushing the speculum in at the wrong angle and it scraped like hell!! She had to try three times to get a good enough sample as I have a backward tilting cervix. I was ready to call it quits and don't ordinarily consider myself intolerant of pain. Better luck next time I hope, for you too.

hiya i had a woman doctor do a colposcopy on me several years ago and she cut me and hurt me that much the sister that was chaperoning her told me to report her for her brutality as i had asked for a woman doctor i needed lazer treatment and put it off for almost a year then had a male doctor do, it as the other lady said speak up and tell them i wish i had but you trust them dont you if they are having a bad day they will take it out on you no matter what anyone says

Some women feel some discomfort but it should never ever be downright painful. If a woman complains of severe pain the person examining should stop immediately.
Did the person examining you find anything out of the ordinary? If not then I suspect it was down to poor technique. Of course, once it starts to hurt you naturally tense up and then it becomes even more painful.
Try not to let this bad experience put you off, the majority of pelvic examinations go smoothly.
