What can I do to alleviate severe menstral cramping?!

Question: I have just gotten my second menstral cycle since having our daughter and the cramps are horrible. The worst that I have ever had in my life. Although the flow is almost gone, I am still having really bad cramps. The cramps are so severe that when my husband brushes against me the slightest I feel like kicking him out of the bed.

I eat well, I exercise and I am definately not overweight. I KNOW that I need to see my GYN and I have an appointment Tuesday morning. I do not want to be in pain until then. Any suggestions?

Your prostaglandins are overproducing (according to one woman's troubles book I have been reading), possibly due to the hormonal changes associated with post-pregnancy. Prostaglandins are sub-hormones that assist blood to clot, muscles to cramp, etc. Prostaglandin production is increased by increased production of insulin ('cause insulin escorts glucose and water (bloat) into the cells and thus increases the production of whatever the cell produces). Insulin production increases when estrogen production decreases (don't ask me why - that is what the experts say), and estrogen production decreases to signal the body to have a menstrual period.

Now that we know this, we just have to eat foods in the two weeks prior to the period that discourages insulin overproduction to have easier PMS's and/or MS's.

Exercise helps decrease insulin production, too.

For short term eating to lower insulin production, avoid all sugars and sugar substitutes and processed food that contains same, caffeine, and foods high in natural sugar (beets, corn, cereals and sweet fruits). Drink plenty of water to help process the protein and lower sugar foods more easily.

Ibuprofen, aspirin, naprosyn or Tylenol should help after a short while as they are supposed to inhibit the production of the prostaglandins.

Heating pad, ibuprophen every 4-6hours. Decrease caffeine & salt intake to decrease bloating feeling.

Go to emergency. Something does not sound right. Perhaps you have a cyst on your ovary or something like that.

take midol they say its great and helps if it doesn't do this go to doctor and have something he can prescribe for you. take care.

I'm capable of having severe cramps. I take Ibuporofen and it takes them away completely. As soon as you feel the coming on take it immediately. For some reason once they hit it is harder to get them to stop.

You can take 800mg of Ibuprofen every 8 hours with food, take a hot shower or hot bath, or use a heating pad to your abdomen.

try a small glass of red wine... always helps me

i had cramps like this before having a baby.
aleve is the shizow! take two as a first dose and then one every twelve hours as directed (i had a dr actually tell me to do that). the initial burst of pain relief may do it.
then i would take a shot (a hefty, single dose) or hard liquor.
sometimes, dare i say it, an orgasm can relieve some of that pain and tension as well.

so sorry you do not feel well :(

Other than the usual painkillers, I can reccommend this and that. I have had good sucess with getting rid of cramps this way:

-Stay hydrated
-Absolutely no caffeine or artificial stimulants
-Try to eat warm, comforting food. Nothing dry or cold.
-Some herbal teas are good for cramps, try ginger, chamomile, and raspberry.
-There is a yoga pose that alliviaes the pressure: Sit cross legged and then bring your feet flat together on the floor (like when you bring your hands together in a flat prayer position). That stretch releives some pain.
-Sleep in as much as possible!
-Get distrated. Calming music, a book, tea, and snacks.

Good luck!

Take ibuprofen, drink a lot of water, stay away from alcohol or caffeine, eat fruit. i hear pineapple juice helps.
exercise works for some, but personally when i'm that way the last thing i want to do is exercise.

when i get cramps i don't want people to get too close to.

take some pills and take a nap. you could eat saltine crackers. use a heating pad.nice hot shower or a long hot bath with bath salts and that kind of stuff... stay hydrated

Take ibuprophen 800mg. You will have to get a perscription from your doctor....If they are that bad...Vicodin which is a narcotic will definately help!!! I feel your pain!!! ouch!!!

if this is an option for you ,you could smoke a little weed.
i wouldn't normally recomend this and if you're breast feeding then of course its not an option.
but this is one of the original medicinal uses for marijuanna.
