Did your cramps and periods get worse after an IUD was put in?!

Question: I've had my IUD (Paragard) about 2 months now. I'm on my second cycle since having the device inserted. My period was definitely more heavy the first cycle, but I figured it would be since it threw my body out of whack. And now it's still heavy, but nothing major.

However, my cramps have gotten much worse with an IUD than when I was using birth control pills. Is this normal?

Please share any experiences you may have had!

I have a Mirena IUD. And, honestly, I had never felt such HORRIBLE PAIN in my life (and I gave birth to Twins!) as I did, having that thing inserted! And, the CRAMPS I had, for a few days afterward, were unbearable. But, after the first month or two (of getting the same old HEAVY periods), things got SO MUCH better! So please hang in there! I don't have my period (at all) anymore, it's been over a year since I had the IUD put in (once in awhile, I will get a bad cramp). But, all in all, I Love the IUD! I wish I had gotten it sooner. If your pain continues, or your worried, go back to your Dr. and make sure all is OK. Good Luck!

I have a copper coil, I had no increased period or menstrual cramps - I suffer from menorrhagia anyway and have never suffered from menstrual cramps. I had mid-cycle spotting, but that's about it.

Bare in mind that in coming off the pill your body is regulating itself again, if you suffered cramps before going on the pill they can come back, or if not it could just be down to hormone imbalances. Try regulating your hormones again and use normal preventative methods for avoiding the cramps. It'll probably go back to normal in a few months, if not then go see your doctor.

These are the most common complaints of IUD users -- especially those using Paragard. It was one of the things you probably should have been aware of (your doctor should have informed you of) prior to insertion.

20% of all IUD users will have the device removed within 12 months because of heavy and irregular bleeding, severe cramping, and health complications (infections, puncture, shift, partial expulsion).

MY experience was horrible. I bled non-stop for 5 months before it finally tore through my uterine wall and started ripping up my intestines.

You can read more about the side effects by going to the Paragard Q&A section of their website (click on "Paragard & my body", then click on "What side effects can I expect?")
