What can I do to "fix" irregular and long periods?!

Question: I started getting my period at age 12, I am now 18, and ever since then I have dreaded that time of the month.

My periods are irregular about 70 to 80 percent of the time and about 99.9 percent of time they last about 7 days.

This is driving me mad, I sometimes get my period in what seems like twice a month and both cycles last about 7 days.

In the end, it seems like I only get a week and half off from not wearing pads.

Does anyone know if going on the Pill will help? And what are the consequences of taking the Pill?

Is there anything I can do to shorten the duration of my periods? ANY advice is appreciated.

Yes, the pill would help. There are certain kinds like loestrin that will make each period shorter (when I was on it, mine was only 2-3 days.) There are also types that can make your period come only once every 3 months (seasonale.) The best course is to tell your doctor how you feel and follow her/his advice.

And 7 days is a normal amount of time for a period. (Most fall in the 3-7 day range.) But if you want to have shorter ones, the pill is definitely an option.

Negative side effects can vary widely from slight weight gain and mood changes to less acne, lighter flow, and less cramps. Everyone is different in how the react, and even your doctor can't totally tell what side effects you will have until you've been on the pill a bit.

I say it's worth a shot. If you don't like it you can always stop. Good luck!

The pill is the only thing I know of that may regulate and shorten your periods. Your doctor will need to decide which one will work best for you and you may need to try several different ones. Different ones have different side effects and everyone is a little different in how they respond too.

It is true that the pill may help.

But my personal opinion would be to try to find more natural methods. The pill uses synthetic hormones and these can be dangerous in various ways.

I personally took the pill for only about 4 months and strongly believe that it was a factor in being diagnosed with breast cancer shortly thereafter.

You could have a hormonal imbalance that is causing your periods to be irregular and long.

Birth control pills can definately regulate your period, and can also shorten them. There are risks involved, including migraines, depression, blood clots, etc. Those risks are low if you don't have a history of those problems. Discuss with your doctor what your risk factors are, and if there would be any problem with you taking birth control. Smoking can greatly increase your risk of blood clots, so if you smoke, make sure your doctor knows. The pill can also cause weight gain, but that can be controlled if you are careful about what you eat and exercise. On the flip side, the pill can have great effects too. It can help with acne, make your periods shorter and lighter, help with cramps, and makes your period very predictable. Talk to your doctor to see if it's a good fit for you. You might also have a hormone imbalance that can be corrected through other methods if you don't want to go on birth control. Your doctor is definately the best source of information though.

why don't you just take a multi-vitamin like One-A-Day for women, my period was always irregular until i started taking it I would even know which day i would get it on
