Basically it is a procedure that they do on you when you have a miscarrage. They probably do it for other reasons as well. I had one done a few months ago for a blighted ovum. They basically, knock you out, dialate your cervix and clear everything out.

Dilation and curettage. It is a type of dilation and evacuation. It is most commonly known as a method of abortion, usually of an early-stage pregnancy, but it is also used to remove dead fetal tissue after miscarriages and to resolve uterine bleeding issues.

"Dilation" refers to the opening of the cervix. "Curettage" refers to the use of a curette, a metal rod with a sharp loop on one end, which is used to remove the contents of the uterus or tissue sample.

As an abortion, dilation and curettage is slightly more dangerous than a vacuum aspiration abortion, and so it has fallen out of favor in parts of the world where vacuum aspiration is available.

Here are some links to wikipedia and Planned Parenthood. However you feel about it politically, P&P is detailed and medically accurate.

It is NOT only used for abortion. It is also used to take scrapes of the womb to send off to check for disease or changes in the cervix.

It is also used after a miscarriage if your body does not pass everything...
