Ovulation test and Natural Family Planning?!

Question: I'm over the whole hormone birth control thing, I want to look into natural family planning and my research tells me that first I should try to familiarize myself with my cycle, how regular it is, etc...

I plan to run the whole basal temp gambit, probably the mucus aspect as well before making a decision and I'm wondering if in addition to all this, it would be worth it to use some ovulation test... any thoughts?

Thank you!

When I started doing NFP, I purchased an ovulation scope like this one: http://www.amazon.com/MaybeMOM-Ovulation...

You can save a lot of money with a product like this, since you don't have to purchase refills or more ovulation predictor kits. You might be able to shop around and find a cheaper one, too. It uses your saliva to check for salt, which occurs in your saliva when you're ovulating, due to higher estrogen levels. If you decide to get one, make sure that you follow the directions closely.

One thing that's very important - make sure that you use a backup contraceptive method, like condoms, until you get the hang of your cycles. It can take a few months of temping and checking your cervical mucous to really get to know your cycle.

You can also check out http://www.fertilityfriend.com to help you chart. They deal mostly with trying to conceive, but you can still use the chart to keep track of your temps and ovulation signs to find out when you ovulate. Taking Charge of Your Fertility is also a great book to read if you're interested in naturally achieving or avoiding pregnancy.
