HPV is the virus that has been linked to cervical cancer, and it can be transmitted through all kinds of sexual activities, even just touching. Cancer is basically just when your cells go haywire...other things may cause cervical cancer besides HPV. Pap smears are really important because they catch cervical cancer much, much sooner than you'd know otherwise.
Even if you're not sexually active, you should go to the gynocologist for a full exam once you turn 18. You go to the doctor for other checkups; there's no reason to neglect this side of your health. Pap smears are a normal part of the exam.
