IUD and period?!

Question: So when I was on pills, if I missed 1 or 2, I'd have breakthrough bleeding. I'd get my period a couple days after placebo pills (on Yaz). I've had IUD for 3 weeks and no period. I didn't take pill day before insertion...not that that matters, no sex then. Why would IUD (Mirena) cause me to skip my period??
