I am getting a copper iud inserted next week and I am very nervous. Does it hurt!

Question: *sigh* While the answers so far are all correct, they are only giving you half the story. Yes, an IUD does increase your risk of STDs and other infections because there is a string that hangs down through the cervix for the purposes of easier removal. It can be trimmed shorter though which my doctor does as a matter of general practice. However, if you are in monogamous, long term relationship your chances of infection are no greater than with any other form of birth control.

Yes, some women do expel the device. That is a possibility. Does it happen very often? No. And yes, some women have problem adjusting to the copper just like other women have trouble adjusting to certain hormone based birth control.

Yes, it is RECOMMENDED that you have already had at least one child before getting an IUD. But it's not always a REQUIRMENT. It's true that most doctors will stick with the recommendation, but there are plenty that are willing to give a IUD to someone who has not yet had a child as long as they are fully aware of the elevated (but still extremely minor) risks. I have a copper IUD and have never had a child.

Everyone says not to get an IUD and talks about how horrible it is or why you're not a candidate, or what other options there are that are so much better, but no one ever admits that the risks are minor, the recommendations are only recommendations and each doctor has the right to make their own assessment, and that for some women all of the hormone alternatives out there are not options because of health or other risks.

There are risks of infection and are low, but it doesn't mean your partner shouldn't wear a condom. If he has an infection or yeast, it could cause a problem or discomfort for you.

Keep your Ph Balance alkaline by eating whole foods and taking care of yourself. Dont' stress out and see how it goes.

My friend actually rejected the IUD... And then carried it back to their doctor to show them what fell in the toilet and their health was just fine.

I wouldn't get that, it's known to cause infections in your womb, i'm not trying to scare you but why don't you try the Implamon, it's a tiny (tiny) tin bar that goes into the side of your arm, it lasts for 4 years and then you get it replaced with another one, it cost me about
