well there are two different ways of doing sonos.
1 on top of belly...They will put sono gel on top of your belly and press a probe on top so they can take a peek or ...
2 vaginal sonogram...They will put a protective sleeve over a thin probe that has some sono gel inside of it....some lubricant on the outside then insert it in to take a look at what is going on.

Honestly I know it does not sound pleasant but the internal one is the better of the two to get a look....it gets closer!! so if that is the one that they do the more you relax the less uncomfortable it is for you.
GOOD LUCK

They could be looking for blockages, cysts, abnormal tissue growth (like endometriosis) or another problem.... Have you recently lost a lot of weight? That can make your periods stop.

Don't expect anything. The technician probably won't tell you anything & you'll get the results from your doctor when he gets them back from the clinic.

They will be looking for cysts, fibroids, thickening of the uterine lining or any other abnormalty.

They are looking for abnormalities. If you've never had a pelvic ultrasound it don't hurt. It's really quite interesting. They run this thing on your tummy and then they get out this dildo with a camera on it. Strange. Don't hurt. Nothing to it. They are looking for tumors or anything out of the norm.

Ultrasound examination gives a very clear view of the status of internal pelvic and abdominal organs. Doctors rely on it to help them distinguish between potential pathological causes of amenorrhoea (absence of menstrual bleeding). Some of the reasons that I can come up with now, may be the following:
1.Delays and irregularities in menstrual bleeding in someone who has been regular may be caused by changes of their genital organs' structure and function, which bring on radical changes in the balance of hormones, and skipping of a menstrual cycle.
2.They may be caused by a state called hematometra (collection of the blood within the uterus). The uterus is not able to let the blood through, because of a constriction of the cervix (but, since it is a very painful state, it's not likely to have happened in your case).
3.Blood test may not have been correct (although they usually are very reliable), and you might be pregnant.
4.Although you didn't give your age, I must mention the possibility of an onset of menopause. It may start messing up regular cycles regardless of age (though it is rare in women younger than 40)

I just got back from having the vaginal sono and it's nothing to it. They insert a probe with a camera on the tip, into the vagina so they can see anything in there. I have a cyst on my ovary and need a hysterectomy, that's why I had a sono. This was my 2nd sono, and trust me, the one on the belly or the vaginal one is nothing to be worried about, it doesn't hurt and it's really not uncomfortable either. Good luck. : )
