How can I convince my Gp that I want to be Sterilised, aged 25 with 1 child?!

Question: My son is now 4. We're well over sleepless nights and dirty nappies, don't wanna do it all again! I've just started my own business and am 100% certain I don't want another baby. I have used the pill, injections and condoms but none of them agree with me and don't want to use the coil (it sounds horrid!) I mentioned to a doc at the family planning clinic that I want to be sterilised but she just laughed at me!
How can I convince a doc that it is definatly what I want?

Laughing was of course inappropriate, assuming that she was laughing at you. It is difficult to arrange sterilisation in women as young as yourself. Even if your GP did refer you, there is no guarantee that the gynaecologist would agree to the procedure. This is particularly true now that effective long term, non-permanent methods of sterilisation are available, such as the Mirena coil.

You don't have to convince your doctor. Why the heck would that be her decision. Find another doctor.

They will probably listen more to your husband - the operation is much simpler on a man. convince your hubby to get the snip instead.

never will happen your too young.

Even if you did manage to persuade your GP you would be hard pushed to find a gynaecologist who would agree at your age. I tried at the age of 30 & couldnt get it done. I too was 100% convinced i had finished reproducing & 6 years later gave birth to my daughter. Thank the lord that doctor said no.

no matter how much you go on about being sterilised.they are not allowed to do it ,not until you are over 30yrs.if you have medical illness then they might. have you try going private, they might do it its got to be worth a try. best of luck xx

i agree with your doctor it may be what you want at the moment but people change. Do you really want your son to be an only child? It can be a very lonely life for him especially when he is older, no brother or sister to share or talk to. i have known a few woman who have regretted not having more children, like you they were convinced they didn't want anymore and have lived to regret it, just like i know a lot of only children who hate being an only child

See another Dr. I had my tubes tied when I was 25, after having 3 children, that was my limit, and I was not sorry. It's your body, and your decision.

Convince hell. It's a job, the doctor does it. Write the check, get it done.

Sterilisation is an operation still done under general anaesthetic and therefore carry's the same dangers as any operation. The easy option would be for your husband to have a vasectomy which is done under local anaesthetic and is a relatively easy procedure with far less recovery time than female sterilisation. The other option for you I think would be Implanon which is the rod inserted in your upper arm and stays there for 3 years and can be renewed every three years. At 25 years of age there are no certainty's that a marriage will last hopefully it will but with today's statistics who knows. What if it didn't and you met someone else who wanted and you may want another baby under different circumstances. I agree with Family Planning you are way too young. Hopefully I have given you some food for thought. good Luck

See another doctor. I got sterilised at age 24 after 2 kids. Absolutely knew whatever happened I did not want any more. Did eventually spilt up with my husband and have been in serious relationships since but never once have I regretted having it done. You know what's right for you, persevere and eventually someone will listen.
