You NEED to let your doctor know that the Ibuprophen even at that high dose is not taking away your pain. Demand that he give you something stronger for the pain (a narcotic type pain medication like Vicodin). Doctor's are known for undertreating pain and it's up to the patient to let her needs be known. Also invest in a hot water bottle that you can buy at any drugstore. The nausea is because your cramping is so bad. And severe cramping is NOT normal. It could be a sign that you have Endometriosis, which is a very progressive disease a lot of women get that messes with their periods, causes them to be very painfull, irregular and heavy. So you are going to have to call the doctor's office first thing in the morning and tell them the medicince prescribed is NOT enough for your pain level. And don't worry, you won't get addicted by taking narcotic type pain medicaiton on your peirods only. Also make sure they prescribe a medication for your nausea. Because certain pain medication will make you nauseated. But don't worry, if one don't work for you, there are several more types to try. I don't like the idea of treating everything with Birth Control Pills which is pretty typical for doctors to try and push on you. It messes with your system on the long run. So try to avoid. But make sure that your doctor knows every single cycle that your period cramping is getting a lot worse. That will make is so they'll run some tests on you to see if you have Endometriosis. And if you do get diagnosed with this, then I feel very sorry for you because it is a Life with a lot of pain. And most women do not get severe cramping at all. Being overweight does not affect the intensity of the cramps.

I don't think the pill can cause cancer.

At least, I don't think it can.

If the doctor says it would be ok for you to get on the pill I don't think you're too young.

But you should go talk to your doctor if this is getting in the way for your life.

A number of things could be causing this. Some girls your age just have a lot of pain and discomfort with their periods, including nausea and vomiting - it tends to even out as you get older. I definitely had that problem as a teen! It was no fun. :(

However since you're overweight and you don't overeat, there could be a different problem at work. It's possible that you could have a condition such as polycystic ovarian syndrome. That's a hormone imbalance that can cause very painful periods and often also causes weight gain. You definitely need to see a doctor about this, so that you can figure out whether this is just normal but annoying teen period troubles, or whether there is an underlying hormonal issue at work.

By the way, birth control pills not only do NOT cause cancer, but they've been linked to a lower rate of ovarian cancer, which is one of the worst kinds of cancers out there. So if you're concerned about cancer, the Pill is one of the best options out there. And it really does help calm your symptoms down. That was the only thing that worked for me when I was your age and having these same problems.

Digital and Infinity: There is a fairly disingenuous study out there that seems to link the Pill to higher rates of cervical cancer, but what's REALLY going on there is that on the Pill more people have unprotected sex and so they contract HPV, which can cause cervical cancer. It's not the Pill actually causing cancer - it's the Pill making people feel so safe that they don't use condoms to protect against diseases. :) The Pill has definitely been linked to lowered incidents of ovarian cancer.

Your period can take alot of energy away from you. I recomend you keep plenty of water up and dont push yourself. Try to avoid cafine and excess sugar. Are you late? if you it can be for many reasons but i dont think the pill could cause it

The pill will not cause cancer, otherwise a doctor would not suggest it.

For me, I think Aleve (naproxen sodium) works better than ibuprofen. It keeps the pain away for longer as well.

Also, if you stick to the ibuprofen, just so you know, you can also take acetaminophen (tylenol), because the active ingredients do not interact. So you could do ibuprofen, and 2 hours later acetaminophen, then 2 hours later ibuprofen again, etc. That helps too.

some birth control pills actually protect against some cancers, but it seems these days that everything causes cancer. i would be more concerned with the problem periods, the pill is probably the only thing short of a hysterectomy that can help you.

I am sorry to hear that honey. When was the last time mom took you to the doctor for this? Did the doctor say anything about you having endometriosis or cysts? Did your doctor tell you that you could get cancer going on birth control pills? Was that information given to you awhile ago? The risk maybe lower now that your a bit older. If it has been awhile since you went to the doctor you may want to ask mom about going back since things are getting worse for you. Now what you could try is eat more calcium rich foods, You may have a low level of blood calcium which does cause lots of pain in periods, try taking more calcium into your diet. Leafy greens, cheese, milk, yogurt and calcium supplements. Also, Exercise regularly. This can stimulate blood flow and ease menstrual pain. You also need plenty of rest too. I hope this helps alittle.

when I was a teenager I had that too, and now that I'm getting close to menopause, i have it again. The Pill does help a lot, when I was young they reccommended you don't take it for more thatn 10 years, which is why they didn't want young girls to take it. But that may have changed. I think it really is your best option, if that's all there is to it. But what GaryM said could be true, you should look into it or talk to your mom or your doctor about that. When I hurt really bad with period pain, it helps to think to myself "by tomorrow it will be over again"
