Has anyone suffered with constipation after laparoscopy?!

Question: I had a laparscopy with helium coagulation for endometriosis and ovarian cystectomy on Tuesday. I had an in and out catheter that afternoon as I couldnt pee and then in the night had one put in until the next morning. (I had to stay in due to breathing problems). I managed to pee normally and was discharged but since then whenever I pee it hurts quite bad and burns and I am very constipated. I have not emptied my bowels since Tuesday morning so Im in quite alot of pain. The lower of the incisions on the bikini line hurts alot more than it did on a previous laparoscopy aswell. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thankyou in advance.

The urethra may be irritated from the catheter but you may have developed a urinary tract infection to to the insertion or antibiotics. When you have a laparoscopy you are distended by air that is inserted to give the doctor a better view. This will cause excessive gas for a few days. Contact the doctor to get the correct stool softener or laxative. The doctor will probably want you to use a gentle product due to the surgery. Before doing anything call the doctor and advise of all your symptoms.

It could be the pain meds giving you constipation.

Call the hospital that you had this done, ask for the Dr on call for the group that did your surgery. He/She can call you in a script or suggest otc med.

I have had several abdominal procedures done, both laparoscopic and regular surgery, and it's very common to be constipated afterwards. Things come to a halt for a while. I would call your dr. ASAP, they can give you some advice, and in the meantime, drink plenty of fluids and try a heating pad on low, it may ease the pain. Make sure to put a towel between you and the heating pad so you don't irritate your incisions.

Best of luck to you, hope you feel better soon.

you might have adhesions on or around your intestines. check with your doc because you do not want to get your bowels impacted. you could try some herbs like senna or cascara sagrada that might help but you should really talk to doc

I had a laparascopy last year in August. I had constipation. I called the doctor and they said it was perfectly normal. Go buy some stool softeners and you'll be fine. It'll go away. Good luck with all your problems. I found out that I had pelvic congestion.

After I had a laparoscopy, I was constipated because of the pain meds. Constipation is a major side effect of narcotics. Increase your water intake, and fiber intake. And if it doesnt get any better, try a mild laxative, like Miralax.
