Question about IUDs?!

Question: I had an IUD put in about 6 years ago. I had it removed to have another child. Since then I've been on the pill but I can't stand the side effects of that. So, I want another IUD. They are great except that when I had the first one inserted I nearly blacked out from the pain of it and it has put me off a little. Does anyone know a way to prevent this from happening again? Can I take something ahead of time that would really help?

You could take ibuprofin 800 mg before you go to the doctor, and then ask your doctor to swab some local anestetic gel on your cervix before the insertion...the same kind the dentist puts on your gums before giving you a shot. It works like a charm!!

Well they are supposed to dilate your cervix but I've heard if you take some pain killers about 30 minutes before your appointment that it helps alleviate some pain.

My dr. put in IUD a couple years ago, and I didn't have hardly any pain at all because he gave me something to relax me, any way take some Motrin or see if your dr. can give you something before hand.

I don't remember having any pain when I had my IUD inserted. There was pressure and some mild cramping afterward but that was it. Check with your doctor to see if they can recommend an over the counter to take ahead of time or if there's an option to use a mild, local anesthesia when they insert it.
