Try not to stress out too much. I have had both female and male doctors. Some have been good and some have been bad it doesn't really depend on their gender. One of my favorite GYNs is male because he has a good personality, puts people at ease, and is very knowledgeable. When you go into the office you will have to fill out a very detailed history. Aside from basic information they will ask for age of first period, length of cycle, cramps, etc. They may also ask for family history especially since many GYNs are also OBs. In the office you will either strip from the waist down and unhook your bra or strip completely and where a gown and have a drape over your legs. Most doctors perform a breast exam first where they just feel for any lumps and may take the time to teach you how to do this yourself. When the vaginal exam is about to start you will be asked to scoot to the end of the table and place your legs in stirrups. Try not to tense up as this will make the exam harder. Take deep breaths and focus on relaxing your muscles. They doctor will insert a speculum (a metal tool that opens the vagina). Sometimes this may feel a little cold some doctors actually have warmers to avoid this. You feel a little pressure but it doesn't hurt and really isn't all that uncomfortable. They will then use a long q-tip to take a sample for the pap smear. It's over in a couple of minutes. When the speculum is removed the doctor will then insert a finger while pressing on the abdomen to feel for any cysts or any uncommon pain. Your doctor will also do a rectal exam that lasts about 10 seconds. That is probably the worst part but it is over so quick. There will be a nurse present during the entire exam so you are never alone with the doctor. If at any time you feel uncomfortable or uneasy tell your doctor. They are used to these feelings and will be able to help you through the exam. Ask questions - ask what is happening, why they are doing what they are doing. Not only will it keep you informed and active but it will keep your mind occupied. Good luck. It really isn't that bad of an experience.

During my period, I had to get a physical. I was so worried they were going to look in. And they did! I started sobbing because I felt sooo invaded! It was horrible! It's OK as long as you have a female doctor. I have a male...

yeah its not fun! They do look in your V... they will have you lay back put your feet in these awkward stirrup things and tell you ti relax your legs apart. then they insert a speculum slowly and gently to slightly reveal the inside,,, then perform an exam. its not fun but just remember your doctor has seen many hooohaas and does this on a daily basis. So don't be embarrassed. you will be fine!! it does not hurt,, usually ... just pressure and uncomfortable,

Conservative or not...they are dr's and have seen it all. I like to see women dr's because I am more comfortable with that over a guy dr.

You will just have to deal with the exam. It does not hurt at all. It is just embarrassing for a few minutes. They may also give a breast exam for lumps. Just a part of life all women need to go through.

Try to relax your legs and not tense up.

they are a doctor that check on your private areas and see that do you have any problems.. they will call you to strip naked.. (don't worry.. the nurse will give you a paper robe to wear later).. and the doctor will ask things about your physical changes.. and might touch your B to check if there's any lumps.. slightly touching your V to check and maybe inserting a rod into it to check your discharges.. i'm most afraid of the rectum test.. its so creepy.... i got a male doctor too and i always feel weird after it..
