one thing that it could mean is removing the clitoris. but usually it's actually considered genital mutilation. it's where they cut that off and sew your lips together down there. really painful and dangerous. periods just end up being really messy. it's so the girl will be "pure" until marriage.
also, i'd like to point out that it's the culture and that not all women have that done to them, but the ones that don't sometimes have a special name that i hear has very bad connotations. but they probably think cutting open a woman's breasts and filling them with bags of silicone is disgusting, so don't judge other cultures because of their practices. you may not agree with them, but that's what they do and have been doing for a long time, you can't just expect them to stop

i dont think they remove the clitoris, just the "hood" around it to make it more sensitive. still sounds scary though!
Please help the discontinuation of the use of this erroneous term female "circumcision".... it is really female MUTILATION. Female "circumcision" in the truest sense would be removal of the clitoral hood..... What people are referring to when they generally talk about the heinous practice in the Eastern world is MUTILATION and shouldn't have a "nice" connotation.
the clitoris is removed to remove a woman's sexual pleasure, and it is a form of brutal mutilation. it has nothing to do with periods - that's a different area of the vagina. as is the urethra.
It's a terrible, horrible, nasty thing to do to women. It's also called "Female Genital Mutilation".

There are a few different ways of doing it.... the most mild being that they only cut the hood of the clitoris (in the same fashion the foreskin is cut from a penis), but the worst being that the clitoral hood, the clitoris itself (what gives a woman pleasure), and the inner labia are removed. Then, the outer labia are sewn together, and they leave only a very small hole for urine and menstration.
It's entirely barbaric. When a woman has sex or has a baby, it is incredibly painful. The woman lives in psychological horror for the rest of her life, and may die in childbirth.
circumsizing a woman means that you are cutting off her clitoris so that she doesn't feel pleasure during sex. It is common in some areas of Africa, and surprisingly the women of the communities do it to the young girls.. not the men. This is because the men want to have the women for sexual pleasure and the women shouldn't feel any pleasure so that they will remain faithful. Since your clitoris has nothing to do with your period (because your period comes from your vaginal canal and inside your womb/uterus) your period will still come every month like normal.. except if you have a problem or if you are pregnant!
That's that! I am so happy to have been born in the US where I can be as sexual as I desire at my own risk. And I am glad that I have all of my womanly body features in tact.
There was an episode of Cold Case or Law and Order or one of those crime shows about this. Basically it's mutilation and illegal in almost every country, yet some consider it like a rite of passage and necessary to become a woman.
They can still have a period. What happens is that part of the labia is removed and the clitoris is removed. There are different types though, 4 if I remember correctly, and that depends on what happens next. In most cases though it is sewn up with only a small whole to allow menstrual blood and urine to escape. It's horrific to read about. They still do it in 3rd world countries and countries that are mostly Muslim. Here in the Us is it is very illegal though.
It's done because its supposed to get rid of all sexual gratification for the woman. Their thinking is that if she can't be satisfied that she will wait for her marriage bed and will not stray from it.
