Why am I supposed to take Metformin [glucophage] with food?!

Question: My doctor prescribed 1000MG of Metformin a day, in 500MG tablets. She wants me to take them all at supper time with food. I always forget, so I usually take them right before I go to bed. Is there a better benefit if I do take them with food? Let me know! I am taking it for PCOS, and have been on it for about 2 weeks.

There are 2 reasons why you should be taking Metformin with food.

1. Food softens the blow of taking medication. You can imgaine, when the tablet hits your stomach it fizzles and disperses with the acid in your stomach. Without food, tablets can damage the lining of your stomach, including the acid pH etc.

2. Metformin is associated with Diabetes and its your insulin. Someone whose insulin secretion is working well would be secreting the right amounts as they eat. You are risking a hperglycaemic attack by eating first, then taking your insulin.
Another good way to ensure the best outcome when taking tablets is to take them with milk. Drink some first, then the tablet, then rinse with somemore. Milk lines the oesophogus and stomach and will protect your flesh from hardcore chemicals.
