Endometriosis doesn't mean that one may never have kids... though it CAN cause infertility (or at least lower chances of conception). But with the current advances in medical technology, it is possible for anyone with fertility problems to conceive, even naturally.

Back to the issue at hand... endometriosis. Yes, it does cause those painful periods. Having a hysterectomy does help as it totally eliminates the menstrual cycle. No menses = no pain. This may be an option for those who have completed their family.

But with current medical technology and knowledge, a hysterectomy is considered a radical option. Few people get a hysterectomy because of endometriosis. There are many other surgical options available for endometriosis besides a hysterectomy. You should consult a gynaecologist for such options.

Endometriosis causes adhesions in your pelvis.... which means things tend to stick to one another. It also causes cysts to occur. A gynaecologist would perform an ultrasound or a laparoscopic surgery (aka keyhole sugery) to see what is going on in your pelvis. A keyhole surgery only requires a few small cuts on your abdomen so that a small camera can be inserted to look into your pelvis. If necessary, therapy can be performed such as adhesiolysis (to make sure things don't stick to each other) or a cystectomy (removal of any cysts).

It is good to consider these options first before going for a hysterectomy. Of course, another method is to just pop those painkillers during your menses (but make sure you confirm the maximum dosage with your doctor.. and that your medications come from the SAME doctor!). But it's always good to re-confirm your diagnosis with the gynaecologist to make sure nothing else has occured that could be causing the pain besides the endometriosis.

All the best!
