Missed a Pill...?!

Question: Hello, I have a very important question. I'm very upset right now since my mom just got through yelling at me and telling me how stupid I am.

Well, here's the scoop. I NEVER have unprotected sex. I've been on the pill now for almost a year and I rarely ever take pills late. Well, for the first time on saturday I had unprotected sex with my partner of 2 years. But then I remembered that I took a pill late earlier in the week. I took my tuesday/wednesday pills both on wednesday.

I'm absolutely terrified as the entire fear-of-pregnancy is new to me. Ever since wednesday I've been taking my pills every single day right on time. I wanted to know if I had a much greater risk of becoming pregnant due to my late pill earlier in the week.

Any honest help would be greatly appreciated. I'm 18 and terrified, and I went to my mom with this question and she just yelled at me and told me I better not get myself pregnant.

I only had sex twice. And the first time there was not much semen.

I'm sorry your mom yelled at you, sweetie! You are fine. Don't worry. You've been on the pill for a long while, AND you did just what you are supposed to do if you miss one. My pills, you could even miss 2 days, and take 3 the following day. (Wouldn't recommend it, though!) Try not to stress, that could make you miss your period...

Kudos to you for being so responsible, it's so nice to see a question that's NOT someone who already had unprotected (no condom, no pill...) sex asking if they are pregnant. Relax. :)

(Oh, BTW, sperm are VERY small, so a little, or a lot of semen really makes no difference--Tons of swimmers anyway...)

Depending on which pill, you may be okay. If your information leaflet that comes with your pills (or you can find the patient info online) says that you need to use a backup method for seven days, then you are at risk for pregnancy. If so, then I would get the morning after pill either tonight or early tomorrow if at all possible. If you are on a pill where you can take one a day late and not need back up protection, then you shouldn't have to worry. Good Luck!

Don't be too worried. It is good that you remembered the pill the very next day and the fact that you took them both - just as you are supposed to in this case is reassuring as well. It would be highly unusual for a woman to become pregnant under these circumstances. You may be able to do the morning after pill, but I am not sure if it has been too long since the event for that to work. I hope that you are not angry at your mom, she is just worried about you. Good luck

Chances are you won't get pregnant if you've been that good about taking the pill. But something you should know is that when taking birth control pills and you get put on antibiotics, they can cancel out the effectiveness of the birth control pills and you most definitely can get pregnant then!! I know, it happened to me!!!!!
