Breast feeding and periods...?!

Question: My son is almost 8 months old and is breast feed. Last month I got my period again and two weeks later it came yet again. Also even when I am not having it I get period like cramps sometimes. Is this normal? Also I am on birth contol pills. Any thoughts or smiliar experiences? Any infomation would be appriciated. Thanks!
