When should i start seeing a OBGYN?!

Question: i asked my doctor today where i could find one and she said that in England you see your GP instead of a gyno and you dont see them for anything but a pap smear and she said you dont start having that test until your 25? and she knows ive been sexualy active since i was 14 (now 19 and with the same guy) and have always been told you should go for check up at least once a year since you become sexualy active & start having pap smear test after 3years of being sexualy active.(i just never bothered till now because my mum didnt want me going to one?) & i have always read this online to. who is right my doctor or other things ive read and heard as they seem to out weigh her opinion, is she right???? please explain? i want to stay healthy and get the test to avoid cancer etc.. like you should, but different doctors tell me different things what do i do? when did you see your first one?

You should start getting pap tests done when you become sexually active. The earlier you are when you start getting your period, the earlier you need to start getting pap smears. I started my first period when I was 12, and although I didn't become sexually active until I was in my 20's I had my first pap done when I was 15.

While a general practitioner can do the smear, I think it's best to go to a gynocologist for this. They have a bit more knowledge, and if there is a problem they are better equipt to deal with it as it happens, rather than a GP who would probably then want to refer you to a gyno, delaying possible treatments in the process.

I think that for you, you should just take the inititive to find your own gyno. I wouldn't trust the info that your GP is giving you, based on the fact that you have been sexually active for a while, and she is telling you that you don't need to have the test until 25 years of age.

In the states, women and girls are encoruaged to start having pap tests when they are 18 or when they become sexually active.

technically you should see your first one when you start having periods...and yes you should see one once a year your pap smears.

I am in the US but here the advice is age 18 and when you are sexually active you should be getting an annual exam and a pap smear. I started about age 19.

As soon as you become sexually active or when you turn eighteen, whichever comes first.

in america, the general rule is 18 or sexually active, or if there is something unsual/painful going on. if you're sexually active, you absolutely need to go.

If you are sexually (this includes oral sex) active you need to go. It is important for your health. Getting tested for various STD's is critical (even if you are monogamous) -just to make sure. It is important that you go to a yearly exam as long as you are sexually active.

you should have been seeing a gyno since your first time having sex.

it is recommended that you begin to see a gynecologist when: no later than 3 years after you begin having sexual intercourse, or you turn 21 (whichever of the two scenarios comes first)..

also, whichever comes first above, you need to get a pap smear. HPV infection is extremely important, and it can be a precursor to preinvasive neoplastic disease in the cervix (i.e. cervical cancer). Pap smears should be done, once a year.

i'm a medical student, and I just finished my two month rotation in the Ob/Gyn department at my hospital. This information is something that we discuss with patients, extensively.

You should start seeing an OBGYN when you become sexual active...so um, 5 years ago.

u need to start to see a dr now..

I'm in Singapore and we should see one once we started our period and later doing a pap smear when reached the age of 21..
