Why do we have blood clots come out when were on our period?!

Question: The reason that many women have clots when on their period is because of the lining that has built up during the month if a pregnancy should occur, and then when the period comes that breaks down. When it breaks down the uterus then pushes it out because it is not needed that month since no pregnancy occurred.

If the clots get to be bigger than the size of a quarter please let your doctor know so that they can evaluate the situation further to see what's causing the big clots to occur.

i think it is tissues that are coming out. you don't leak blood when your on your period

I think it's just the tissue of the uterus lining.

Think about it - you body prepares for pregnancy every month, and your uterus sets up a nice cozy lining for the egg, right? If you don't get pregnant, the lining breaks down and that is what you bleed out during your period. So sometimes it comes out in little clots instead of just a steady bleeding.

blood doesnt just constantly come out, it does pool at times, when it pools it clots, then after awhile the clot comes out. The menstrual fluid consists of blood and tissue from the uterus, sometimes its not all blood that makes up the clot sometimes its the lining of the uterus thats being shed that you see as well, but its normal...unless you are a very heavy bleeder with a huge amount of clots, then you should see a doc

Menstruation is the shedding of the lining of the uterus (endometrium). This is the layer in which the egg becomes implanted in pregnancy. Every month a new endometrium is created and then shed. This uterine lining is made of blood vessels (spiral arteries), cells (columnar epithelium) and glands. It is not just plain blood. Sometimes slightly larger areas of endometrium are shed at one time. These are the blood clots.
