Yes for EXTRA precaution and to protect yourself from STD's but other than that no! It is a birth control! I used it and did not get pregnant using it!
About 3 weeks or so... I hated the nuva ring.. It always left me dry, and it came out once...

The documentation that comes with it should explain.
But having said that, it should be a full cycle before it is at maximum effectiveness, since it effectively works the same way as the pill.
