Are girls getting their periods sooner now?!

Question: My 10 year old got her first period yesterday, and she told me she is one of the last in her 5th grade class to "get it". When I was growing up, it seemed like 12-13 years old was the norm? I was shocked when her breasts started developing a year ago, but now I'm wondering if something's going on. I limit her fast food to maybe once a month and give her organic milk. What do you think is happening with the earlier onset of puberty?

I beleive it is the hormones that are put in dairy and meat products. People are eating them more and more. People are also dining out more and more making it more difficult to control what goes intot he foods. I think organic is the best way to go

I answered a question similar to this yesterday and I agree with the first answer.

I was never much of a meat eater and I hit puberty way later than my sisters (who eat meat--I think there is much more hormones in meat than other foods). They started puberty at around 11 and I didn't even get my period until I was 14.

i too believe it is hormones. if your child is around friends who are mature; meaning they have their periods. they can literally pull her ahead and able her to get it sooner. its a true fact.

i never drunk a lot of milk & i got my period @ 14 years of age...so i think the same as aleco_32
&&& i love meat!!! i eat it all the time..

Studies indicate that girls are starting menarche about 6 months sooner than they were in the 1950's, which is NOT that appreciable a difference. In the 1950's menarche was about 13.1 years, now it is averaging at about age 12.45 years.

Some studies attribute this to hormones found in foods and fertilizers; others to environmental factors such as latent radiation.

I think that social perceptions are changing. Girls are socially maturing faster, and it is "in" to discuss periods and maturation.

I got my period when I was a few months away from my 11th birthday...almost 30 years ago. So it really depends on genetics as well as external factors.

yeah i think they are i was 13 years ols when i started mine!

I'm 20and got my period the summer before grade 5. They are comming quicker and quicker. Soon it will be from the uterus to the menstral pad. And its the hormones in everything. Just because your kid is vegan doesn't mean that they won't get it just as soon as the next kid.

i dont think so because my little cousins get there period at 12 and the other i think at 10 but noothing to worry about. just read some articles if you want to let you help you out! i got mine when i was 9 years old. its all about genetics.

Yes they are and it is actually to do with nutrition. The sex hormones that trigger the onset of puberty are released once the body has reached a certain weight... its the same with most mammals. Today children are getting to that ideal body weight alot faster and with more ease than they were 10 or 20 years ago and therefore the onset of puberty is starting earlier and earlier.

Yes, girls have been starting their periods earlier. I don't know why, but pretty soon we're going to have pregnant 8 year olds. It is rediculous. Doctors will not prescribe birth control to girls under the age of 13 unless it is a medical problem, because if you start that early, they may become fertile when they want to have kids. Good luck with your 10 year old daughter! I did not start my period until I was 12, the same with all my other girlfriends. And when I was 10 I don't think anybody in my class had started theirs yet.

At always.com there is this fact that a long time ago the avrage age was 13-15! to get your first period and then it said that now girls are getting it sooner cause they are healthier., or it could be the milk that she is drinking.I heard that some milk speeds up puberty.
