Leaving you tampon in for that long just that one time shouldn't be so bad, but try not to forget again(the box does warn you about toxic shock syndrome) and that can be the result of leaving it in to long.
As for you friend i had the same problem with my overly heavy period it was heavy and it stayed on 4 to 7 months at a time i tried the pill, it just regulated but it didn't lighten it. So i try the depo shot, for the first three months on the shot i bled three months straight, so i talked to my LPN and she told me to take four Ibuprofen every eight hours, it sounds like a lot, but it actually worked. I also heard from a friend that taking a teaspoon af vinegar helps. So i took the Ibuprofen and a teaspoon of vinegar every eight hours and within three days i stop bleeding completely, and now i don't have a cycle at all, that's because on the depo you can either have a period or no period at all, but after all the bleeding that i had done in the past i don't mind. So tell you friend to try that she don't have to start the shot just the pills and vinegar.
Good luck

Sounds like your friend needs to use a bigger bad, or needs to get those special "long" pads made specifically for night-time use.

As for leaving it in twelve hours, I'm sure your fine if it's only happened once. The same thing has happened to me before... I'll go to bed forgetting that I have one in. But it hasn't "harmed" me at all. It could be dangerous if it happens continuously, but if you just slipped up the once you'll be fine. Just try not to let it happen again, I guess.

If you start to get a fever or not feel well, see a doc........it may be okay though.

i know its been a week, but i would speak to your Doctor, you most likely fine, but TSS is not something you want to mess with, but in the small chance you do have it, it easy to treat as long as you catch it early.

well, if it makes you feel better, my obgyn told me in his whole career he has never seen a case of TSS and he had patients who left tampons in for like a month (nasty)! But you should be mindful of it cuz TSS is real, regardless of what he said, i knew a girl in middle school who got it and had to be hospitalized.

Although TSS (toxic shock synrome) is very rare, it is also very dangerous. I am sure you are fine, but if you start to feel sick see a doctor. From now on, don't leave them in that long. As for your friend, it is ok to wear a pad and a tampon. Sometimes women get periods so heavy that they have to wear both. There is nothing wrong with doing it and it won't hurt you in any way as long as both the tampon and the pad are changed regularly.
