WOMEN!! i need some advice.......?!
Question: ok ive been on ortho cept (birth control pills) since last june. i hate taking them, i have expierenced dryness, mood swings, etc. the other that i was on was fantastic but i needed a higher dosage of hormones because i was starting my period while i was on it. now im on this current one. i dont like taking medicine and i dont want to take bc anymore cause of the hormones. would it be a wise idea to get the over the counter spermicides to protect me during sex? my sis's friend uses them and she has never been preggo. but yes i know everyone is different. i know you have to factor in human error, and also effectiveness. but i was wondering yalls input on it.

i only have 2 months to spare, my bf leaves in may for iraq. after that i dont have to worry about this cause i ll be a nun!! ha ha

I will share my personal stories. This may not be the case with everyone, but this is just the case with me.
I was on birth control when I was 18. I took it everyday at the same time never missing a dose. I didn't like the side effects (weight gain, bleeding, mood swings etc.) but I took them to be safe anyway. Well at 19 yrs. old I found out that I was pregnant! Yep! Never missed a pill and I was pregnant. Go figure..
Since the birth of that baby at age 20 I stopped birth control since it didn't do much good at protecting pregnancy for me and I have been using CVF and condoms. The come in boxes of 10-15, they are thin sheets that you insert 15 minutes before having sex, they are spermicide. I always follow those using a condom. There has been times that I just use the spermicides. It has been 5 years using these methods and I haven't gotten pregnant. I feel MUCH safer with this method rather then pills.
However, I also chart my cycles. You can chart your cervical mucus, temp and moods and after a few months know what you are ovulating. You simply avoid the days you ovulate and are fertile or use backup ie: condoms.
You can google pregnany fertility charting and find lots of information on it. There are also free online tools and calenders to help you along. Maybe this could be something you do while you man is away. When he comes back you will then know your body and what days to avoid. Just thought I'd share this idea, it really works great. You can try www.fertilityfriends.com for some info. and free calenders. Some women use this to become pregnant while I always used it to avoid pregnancy. It works either way. There's only that 1 day out of every month to become pregnant. Find that day with your body and there ya go!

Get the depo shot. I can't remember how long it takes to kick in, maybe a couple weeks. Just don't go off the pill for a month after you get the shot. You can call your doctor and get it done tomorrow. But if you don't want to risk it then don't switch right now.
I don't know much about birth control because i have never taken them but i know of another contraceptives that have worked for me. I don't like condoms but somebody recomended to me the Today Sponge. It goes inside the vagina kinda like a diafram and it also has spermicide in it. You can't feel it, you can put it in hours ahead of time and it adds a little extra lubrication. he wont even know that you have it in.
Me personally I never was able to take any form of birth control due to health issues. So I have always had to find other ways to protect myself. I have used the spermicides, but the thing with them is I noticed me personally I can only use them once in a great. Constant use gave me irratation. I never got pregnant while using them, but like any method there never 100% guranteed. What about condoms. To me condoms is a good way to go to protect yourself not just from pregnancy but STD's. I know so many people say they hate them but I dont see why. Im married and me and my husband mainly use the pull out method(which I dont reccomend unless you've been doing it for awhile and know your ovulating times etc) but every once in awhile we want to be able to "go all the way" and I purchase the Trojan condoms that are for her pleasure. And I think there great.
But in general the spermicides have worked for me, but again theres no gurantee.
