Quit smoking & gained weight?!

Question: I have a 3 year old son, when i had him i was 175 lbs, by his second birthday i was at 105lbs and was told i looked sick,10 months ago i quit smoking cigarettes and since than have gained at least 30 to 40 lbs, my energy level is 0. I have to push myself hard to get things finished on a daily basis.
I am frusterated because i was able to quit smoking but put on a lot of weight, and now i feel like if i'd just kept smoking i would still be thin, i am very unhappy with my body i am very short just under 5 ft and i just want to get this weight OFF!
so my question is has anyone else had this same problem? what have you done to fill in that lack of a cigarette... i replaced it with food and soda which i have cut back on. I would just like to see if anyone has had this same problem and how they got past it. thanks anyone who replies!

I am going through the same thing, I just stopped smoking about 2 months ago. I found if I kept myself busy then I wouldn't think about it or food. Try going for a walk every time you want to eat or have a cig. Also stay away from Soda and snacks. If you are going towards a snack, drink a whole glass of milk or water, and it should take away the craving. Also I try and clean everything. If I feel like I am about to give up and start smoking again, I start to clean the ENTIRE house. Like things I didn't even know could get dirty lol.
Also take your son out and play with him as much as possible. It will take your mind off of it.
Hope it helps :)

Most people gain weight when they quit smoking. This happens because the person is used to having something in their mouth and are just continuing the habit. Try a toothpick or something.

This is a very normal thing. People even use cigarettes to deter hunger!
This is what helped me. When you get aggravated, feel the want for a cig, or the want for that extra cal intake go take a jog, do some type of exercise - it will take your mind off whatever it is, and you will be getting in shape in the process. I started by hopping on the tred, then did some dance work out videos - anything that kept my mind and body busy.
Good luck hun!

the reason why you put on so much weight was because you werwe trying to find a destraction (like eating) so you don't smoke. it's very common. i have never smoked but my parents have and i never plan on smoking because of how it has affected them. go to a gym maybe get a trainer and work out. that's a better way to lose the weight. he'll advice you to get on a diet, not too serious, but on ethat will go along right with you work-outs.
well, that's my advice.
have fun!

Eat a lot of fruit and veg and not a lot of meat it is worth the weight gain to gain a longer life. I know the feeling of losing someone to lung cancer

Nictone naturally supresses your appetite causing you to eat less. When you quit smoking that supressant is gone. Also, smoking is a stimulant, now that you have taken that stimulate away your energy level has dropped. It is normal to gain a significant amount of weight when you quit smoking ( I gained 20 lbs). Instead of running to the fridge when you crave a cigarette, do 15 sit-ups and drink a glass of water. Pop some sugar free gum in your mouth if you are out in public. Also, the sight below gives some advice on how to prevent the dreaded weight gain from not smoking. Good luck!

You just answered yourself. You need to be convinced that not smoking was the best decision you ever made. You continue to look for a substitute and found it in food. This is normal in ex smokers. You need to find a balance and opt for moderate exercise and a balanced nutrition. You need an objective, a plan, and you need to stick to it.

Instead of focusing on the 'If I smoked I would still be thin' angle, better yet, focus on the 'I beat smoking, I will beat the excess weight' angle.

Instead of smoking, you can use the nicotine gum or lozenges to give you a boost.
