Are condoms safe enough?!

Question: I am tired of taking birth control and I am afraid of the side affects after taking it for a long time. I have heard it can cause cancer and I don't want to take my chances. I have just been wondering if using a condom works well enough to not get pregnant. Right now we use both to be on the safe side.

Condoms are as effective as the package says only if used properly - BEFORE ANY contact. That being said, my husband and I have used condoms since we've been married - almost 8 years and we've only gotten pregnant when we were actually trying. We've not had any surprises, we've also never had a break or a slip. Just make sure he's using one that's comfortable for both of you and make sure it's the correct size for him or you could have problems with them.

it could be safe, but there is always a possibility of condoms breaking.

I do the same thing!

The thing with condoms is that what people TYPICALLY do is different from PERFECT use - Perfect use gives you 99% protection. Typical use (that means- it slips, breaks, you don't put it on soon enough, he doesn't pull out properly, etc) is more like 80% effective.

What about an IUD? I was going to get one, but had some issues with insertion - I am now reweighing my options.

Condoms are chancy. Investigate this further or have your tubes tied.

I wouldn't trust a condom alone.. I have a son, that wasn't expected because of one breaking and leaking. There is some really good options now to use. Nuva ring (insert only once a month), Implanon (lasts 3 years), IUD, etc... read about some of these at the site I sent here...

Condoms are safe as long as they put them on right, Dont ever let them use a condom out of there wallet, and if it breaks you are screwed at least if you take birth control also you have a back up for not getting pregnant
