Okay -- honest to God, the worst pain I've ever felt in this kind of exam, it just felt like someone with long fingernails was pinching me on the inside just for a second and that was it.

Here's what they'll do -- the doctor will probably check out your boobs first, to make sure that there aren't any weird abnormalities (and I don't mean freckles or anything, I mean REALLY weird abnormalities, like the head of Jimmy Hoffa is growing out of your nipple or something).

Then the doctor will look at your vulva (or, what you call, "down there"). She'll look at the outside first, to make sure there aren't any problems there; then she'll put something called a speculum inside to hold your vagina open. This is a tool that looks kind of like a duck's head, and is usually made of either plastic or metal; she'll probably use lube on it so it won't hurt going in.

She may try and feel your ovaries by putting one finger inside your vagina and one hand on your stomach and gently prodding around with both hands a little; this feels a little weird, but shouldn't hurt. The last thing she'll probably do is take some swabs for routine tests like Pap smears; she'll take something that looks like a long Q-tip and gently scrape it across your cervix. She may do this a couple times with different Q-tips, one for each test. Then she'll take out the speculum and let you get dressed again, becuase you're done.

If you are scared, you can ask questions of the doctor at ANY time during the exam; even if you're asking every two minutes, "what's that thing? And what are you doing now? And how about now?..." That's okay, because the doctors want to make you feel okay about what's happening. If something hurts, you ABSOLUTELy can tell your doctor that, and see if she can be more gentle. (Some things just may not be comfortable and it can't be helped, but it shouldn't be super-excrutiating pain at any point no matter what.) Finally, your mother probably will NOT be in the room with you while this is happening -- this is a doctors' rules thing.

You'll be fine, I promise.

how old are you, and did they say that you were gonna get a pap smear? if you have to have a pap, normally after 18yrs of age, or sexual activity, there are sites that will tell you all about it. And yes it does hurt a little bit.

They will more then likely give you a pap smear. I had my first one a little before i turned 19. They'll lay you back on the little chair, tell u to scoot waaaaaay down and they'll place your feet in stirrups (little cups that hold ur heels basically)...a good gyno will talk to u and explain what he is gonna do and when. they'll find an appropriate size (whatever those metal things are called) and they'll put in inside of ur vagina, crank it up (sounds really gross but it wont hurt, it only feels like a lot of pressure when they are actually sticking the thing in)....and they'll take a few samples of ur cervix, etc (u wont feel or see any of that), and they'll unclamp the metal thing, and u'll be on ur merry way. a lot of people dont like it cause of the pressure, but it really helps to go in somewhat relaxed, because the pressure is 90% of you tensing up. Dont worry, you dont have to do this every day but it is essential for every young woman to go through it, and u will survive. lol, its like a rite of passage. if it will make u feel better, ask the gyno to show u everything and explain the process before actually performing it. it's always good to have good communication with your doc. Good luck!

There are medical videos on youtube that you can watch that will show you what exactly happens at an exam. They show with real live people. Theres like 6 parts to the video Examination of the vagina or something to that effect.

Your mom should be able to stay in the room with you while the doctor does the exam.

Its not that bad. I'm very uncomfortable with someone being down there as well. What they're going to do is take a look at it and make sure that you dont have any cancer or anything. I'm guessing your sexually active b/c if you werent you wouldnt be getting that test done. They're going to check for std's and what they are going to is they're going to insert think thing, dont really know how to describe it but they're going to put some lub on the clamp(the thing) b4 they put it in you, so it doesnt hurt. Once its in you they going to open the clamp up which will open your vagina up. Then they are going to take a long q-tips and insert it in you and go around in a circle (just to collect data) and depending on what you get tested for determines how many Q-tips they're going to use. The doc is going to put his/her finger inside of you, just to make sure evrything is fine down there. I forgot how deep they go, but it doesnt really hurt that much.
Over all its not that bad, I thought it hurt just a little b/c I'm pretty tight but its not bad. I was like about to cry b/c I didnt want to get it done and plus my mom was saying how painful it was but its really not. I guess it all just depends on your pain tollerance. Honestly its not that painful at all. Hope anything I said didnt scare you. You'll do fine & it'll be fine.
Good Luck
***remember always use protection when you have sex (if you have sex) My gyno told me that when people dont use protection they're playing with fire, and if you keep playing with fire you're bound to burned sooner or later!

If you are scared ask your doc to explain everything that they are doing before they do anything and then ask them to tell you while they are doing it. I am 29 and still get nervous when I have to get one done. I usually look at the celing cause they do not last long at all. one poster forgot to mention that they will do a pelvic too which is where the doc puts 2 fingers in and feels for your ovaries.. good luck and if you are really nervous have your mom in there you are covered up and they have been through it and can explain things too. And if things are normal you only have to have it done once a year if you are sexually active. Good luck

It is very quick and painless. You are covered up with paper sheets. The doctor will perform a pap test. And a breast exam. Usually you speak with the doc first before he examines you for the first time. Hang in there, and try some comparisons like think about those pregnant women who have to go each month or week to the doc.
