Metformin and PCOS?!

Question: What is Metformin used for in people with PCOS? I am 15, and have PCOS. I am having a terrible, terrible time losing weight. My mom refuses to let me go on Metformin because she says it's a pill for diabetics, and it's not for people with PCOS. Is she right?

to some extent your mom is right....metformin can be used to treat diabetes...how ever it is used in women with PCOS to regulate your period. this will also help lose some weight...it will be really hard been battleing it for 4 yrs. have her talk with your doc. they can explain it to her so she can understand it.

The medication increases sensitivity to insulin, so yes it is used to treat and control diabetes. The reason it is used for PCOS is because women with PCOS generally have a problem with their bodies not being as sensitive to insulin. It doesn't mean they are diabetic because they are able to process the sugars, unlike a diabetic. I wouldn't suggest going on it if you don't have to. It is horrible, makes you feel sick. It shouldn't be just used for weight loss. The only reason I went on it was to try and get pregnant. Try a well balanced diet and exercise, its not "easy" for anyone to lose weight. You do have to work at it. Avoid medications, you don't need it until you want to have a baby.

It helps regulate these problems to make it easier to have a baby.
