Has anyone ever experienced pain when having a smear test done?!
Question: I am unable to have a smear done as it is so painful, even the small speculum hurts me. I have a good pain tolerance, but its just so bad that it has to be abandoned and it leaves me sore for days after. I am 30 and have a partner who is sympathetic and tolerant when we have sex ( when it is possible for us to do so). I am worried that something serious may be wrong and want the smear to be done, but its not successful. Any advice, other than relax and breathing excercises which I have tried?

You might experience some discomfort or pain - try to relax by taking slow, deep breaths as it may hurt more if you are tense. If it is painful, tell the doctor or nurse straight away as they may be able to reduce your discomfort.
Vaginismus can cause both deep and superficial pain and is a common cause of pain during sex. It's a spasm of the vaginal muscles, caused mainly by fear of being hurt.
Some women with vaginismus have never been able to have full sex or even use tampons. They also tend to be very fearful of vaginal examinations and so may never have had a smear test.

This could be it as I can't use tampons, gave up on that idea years ago Report It
