The doctor inserts the speculum into your vagina and opens you up. It is uncomfortable, but it doesn't take long. He then inserts a plastic instrument inside to scrape a little of the skin cells off of your cervix. This is to test for cervical cancer which is a form of HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). If you are young and plan to be sexually active, then you can get a vaccine for cervical cancer...it's called Gardasil. Ask your doctor for more info.
