Will taking anti-biotics affect the effectiveness of an iud?!


Question: It depends on what sort of IUD you have.

If you have Mirena, then, yes, the antibiotic rifampin can affect the effectiveness of your birth control.

However, if you have the non-hormonal copper IUD, ParaGard, then, no, it will not affect the effectiveness.

Also, IUDs do NOT work by scraping the inside of your uterus....first of all, it doesn't even make sense since they are too small to do such a ridiculous thing, and if that were the case, why bother putting hormones into it?

When in doubt, call your pharmacist :)
