Side-effect of birth control?!

Question: I've been on birth control for about 4-5 months now - I am wondering if decrease in desire to be intimate could be a side-effect? My relationship hasn't had any downfalls, and our intimacy was always good until right after I started the shot. Its so frustrating I just have no desire to be intimate now. I can't figure out why else it could be?... Is this a possible side effect, or just a strange coincidence? (I'm in my young twenties).

Yeah it can cause a lack of libido. And it can cause depression as well. I'm in my young twenties too, have had to stop using the pill for abovementioned reasons. Haven't started using anything else yet, just weighing up my options! You should go to the doc, they will be able to recommend more suitable alternatives.

And by the way, it can take a while for the libido to come back after you stop using the birth control... like a coupla months. So don't despair if it doesn't work straight away! :)

I am guessing since u said shot u are on depo.....my advice is get off of it ASAP it causes all kinds of probs and has a higher rate of cancer. And yes it can cause lower sex drive too.... can cause dryness and bleeding as well

yes, birth control does effect your libido in some women. It lessens the desire for a lot of women. It can subside after some time, but it can take awhile.

you just need to find a new hot chavo, orale ;-)

yes.. birth control can cause a decrease in libido... its the increased estrogen in ur body.. try talking to ur dr. about a pill with less hormones in it, like YAZ or Alesse.... i use alesse and it has worked great.. i have tried several others, like orthotrycycline and yaz and both of those gave me migraines and severe wight gain... the pill affects each girl differently.. one might be good for me but bad for you... just talk to ur doc.. she'll prolly suggest a change

There are LOTS of side effects from birth control. You're essentially throwing your entire body out of whack. A decrease in libido is definitely one of the big ones you can experience.

Honestly, I have heard horror stories about the shot from everyone I know who's used that method. It may be nice to not have to worry about taking a pill, applying a patch, yada yada...but each method has different effects. From what I've gathered, the shot has some of the worst emotional/psychological effects out of any of them. Don't mean to scare you, but if you're already experiencing really unwanted side effects, I would recommend looking into a different method.

Or, at least talk to your gyno about what you've been experiencing and some possible alternatives.

Good luck!
